Review - The Whitlams “Women
In Uniform”
FOW exclusive single on
Phantom Records
The Whitlams didn’t surprise many people
with their success at last year’s ARIA
awards, but stunned almost everyone with their version of Skyhooks’ Women In Uniform at the close of the
show. That surprise was turned to delight for Friends
of the Whitlams when the announcement came that they would be privy to that
recording as a single with some demos for the new album.
This particular version of the performance
disappoints a little as it doesn’t seem to be the actual recording from the
night - too clean, too polished, no audience or live ambience, no “Baby, you’re
surrounded! Let’s have some fun!” The real reason for getting this FOW-only release was to get a pre-taste of the
forthcoming album. High Ground
follows in the same vein as “Nightcap”
and guarantees a Hottest
100 berth or two and maybe another ARIA.
All this from a demo recording! What does the album promise? More demos
please!! 1999 closes the single with
a bit of heavy guitar but still retains some of that classic Whitlams toungue-in-cheek that
earned all those long-awaited gongs.
