Review - frank the band “frank”
independent EP
frank the band have released their self-titled debut EP. frank
the band are a 4-piece from Tiger Territory
(Balmain/Rozelle)
in Sydney's inner west. “frank” the
EP has a long pedigree, including Humungus studios (Rumblefish), Troy Horse (just about anyone) and Blicka
(Janine
Emerson) in order of appearance on the recording, mixing and
mastering credits.
From the close-up of the infamous Dancing
Baby staring pensively into space, long enough to have been captured twice in
the same pose but the second time with a 5 o'clock shadow, to the inauspicious
green-brown disc, this debut is quiet, unassuming and definite about its roots
and influences. Four tracks are delivered in a pop-guitar almost funk surround,
with familiar sounds to the tunes, excellent vocal harmonies in Masterpiece, almost metal-guitar effects
in See Her Cry and Darren
Nurick's vocals coming as a mix of Frank & Soly (Shmoo)
and, in The Eternal Optimist, early David
(Starman) Bowie.
To be frank, “frank” the EP is a little too unassuming, a little too quiet, and
not enough in-your-face to be the next big thing. frank the band “frank” EP «««
