Review - Floyd Vincent & the Child Brides "Last Exit Motel"
album on Grudge/Universal through BMG

Floyd Vincent has been treading the boards of the world’s music venues for many years, yet he retains a very down-to-earth outlook and attitude to his performances, be they as a solo acoustic support at a jazz venue or his regular jam-packed Sunday night spot. And a performer of that nature simply has to have something on CD which fans can take home and rehearse the moves for next week’s gig. "Last Exit Motel" on Grudge/Universal through BMG is the latest such release and is as musically varied as those live shows.

When Floyd tours Europe with his Child Brides des jours, as they often do, he takes in many parts of that continent. From both the live shows I have seen and this album, he would have to favour the Spanish legs of these journeys. There are a dozen tracks listed on "Last Exit Hotel" (a road sign in a Spanish desert and later used in a poem by Jen Jewel Brown, not an actual accommodation that the band frequents) and only one or two of them don’t have that flamenco/latin feel. Even the song Chanteuse (French for ‘singer’ but not in French), and the song written for the Dinosaurs TV show Caveman have the latin flavour, despite not having anything to do with being Spanish!

With all this influence, Floyd and his Brides retain a definite Aussie attitude, especially in I Gave Myself To You and $6 Steak & Chips, making them the party band to give your next night out that extra something to look forward to
