Review - diana Ah naid “I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant”

album on Origin through Shock!

There will be as many people who are familiar with various releases from diana Ah naid as there are who are not. And those who are will know her mostly due to I Go Off: the angst, those guitar harmonics... Then there were several other outings on the strength of that release and, as it happens, things went quiet. One reason was that she had to have ‘complete vocal rest’ and was not permitted to talk for a month. Another was the creation of a new side of an artist which is now on full display on her brand new album “I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant”, still on Origin but now through Shock!

This record is example enough of an artist who will not be pigeon-holed; won’t be penned into a musical rut; will not limit her muse to just one influence. It’s like she’s started out from scratch; like I Go Off didn’t happen; like this is the debut of a brand new artist that we’re sure we’ve heard before but we just want to keep playing it to figure out if it was she or someone else! The current (first) single from “I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant” is example enough - there’s still the pain, but it’s not as hopeless as those in the angry-female genre tend to have. To be honest, the single (Perfect Family) didn’t survive two plays on my car radio, but hearing it in context to the album has changed that completely.

“I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant” explores so many facets of diana the artist, the musician, and now diana Ah naid the band! The sound is hu-ug-ge and each track is bigger than the last. Choosing a stand-out track from these 13 gems is nigh-on impossible: each is a single in itself and if her debut album sold 10,000 and gained her fans across the country, this one will surely break her world-wide. It followed the American tradition of being recorded all over the place and has paid aural dividends.

I can’t say enough about it, but suffice is to say that diana Ah naid’s “I Don’t Think I’m Pregnant” album on Origin through Shock! is going to break more ground for this pint-sized dynamo than ever before HHHHH
