Review – Cradlemint self-titled

Independent album

Mark Stuart Crocker seems to be the basis of this east Melburnian three-piece with a penchant for heavy/pop music in the same vein as Smashing Pumpkins. On most of these songs Mark comes over all Billy Corgan quite a lot but the music is familiar yet original and on 15 tracks – remarkable in itself for an independent review – there’s quite a mix of genres and influences in this record but I’d have to say the Pumpkins stand out as the most influential.

Cradlemint are not backward in coming forward either, with very strong lyrics (hence the parental guidance sticker) and titles like Suck On This (a latter-day Death On Two Legs but holding much less back). A good debut, all up, but I’d like to see the band live or listen to their other music before making any statements like “the next best thing”, although that is definitely on the cards if they’re backed and/or noticed
