Review – Azure Ray “Sleep”

Single on Warm Records through Rubber

You may remember the sounds of Azure Ray from Moby’s recent outing. No? Well his shows in the States this year were supported by them. Atlanta-based duet Orenda (Japancakes, Little Red Rocket, Bright Eyes, Now Its Overhead) Fink and Maria (Little Red Rocket, Bright Eyes, Now Its Overhead) Taylor present to us the second of three releases back home, but the first here in Oz on Rubber Records through BMG.

Think Enya meets Clouds and / or Voice of the Beehive, without the pop-inspired bounce, and you’d pretty much have an aural picture of what to expect on the new single “Sleep”. And reading through some other reviews on the Warm Records site, I would have to agree with many of the reviews thereon, especially the one entitled “music my cat likes to sleep to.” It is interesting to see music like this being staged prior to a Moby gig when you’d expect it in the Chill-out room!

This is actually the band’s second release, according to the discography at Warm Records, of Athens Georgia. The self-titled album is due out in September on Rubber, whilst it has been since January 2001 on Warm. Meanwhile in September Warm will be releasing Burn and Shiver to their local market. Confused? Sorry – didn’t mean to… just hook up to either the Warm or Rubber sites and check out Azure Ray.
