Review - Apostrophe self-titled

independent EP through ODS

What is Apostrophe? After being in their acquaintance for a while and experiencing their live show a couple of times, the question remains. Are they funk? Are they rock? Are they serious? Now there’s the much-anticipated debut self-titled CD through ODS which even brings normally-staid and reserved Anton into the fore, even if it is under the guise of an accountant! There’s also Super Steve, Bennett the cybergeek (looking for all the world like a cross between Flacco and the Lawnmower Man) and Scott.. ah Scott! I want my ADD, and we ain’t talkin’ recording and transfer methods!

But a CD is as much about the music thereon as it is about the packaging thereof. And still the question remains - surely they can’t be serious! Are they taking the piss? Cybergeek opens strongly with a heavy-rock thing al-la Red Hot Chili Peppers, while the funk is dropped for Kosher Kannibal. Accountant Song and Comic Superhero tend actually to lose the established flow, but KFH and Phlegm (two personal favourites from the demo days) restore that flow for the close.

Technically some work could have been done to remove the buzz and hum from the recording but in the end it’s about having a good time! If any of the established Serious Fun rock-bands want to call it quits, Apostrophe will be able to fill in with consummate ease, as always «««
