- Animation '98 EP'
independent CD
Animation are not a band that is happy to sit in one genre. Listening to their "98 EP" is like listening to a very short various-artists collection where all the singers sound the same but their musical direction differs somewhat.
The record opens with an excellent pop-rock track Dig It, a
little too intricate and funky on the bass for an almost in-your-face rock
track with pop leanings. Looking Glass retains the bass riffing almost
in the Mike
Oldfield “Tubular Bells” style, but this time it fits
the rest of the laid-back acoustic ambience of the song. You're Living
comes up a little more funkier but would have been better at track 3 with Looking
Glass here instead. Sitting On Top has been remixed to create an
early-80s feel with OMD/Depeche Mode/Soft Cell rhythms and keys effects
between the rock retentions of the original recording (I assume).
It will be interesting to see these guys live or hear another recording
to see if they continue with the sonic experiments or try to find a niche.
