Review – Ancient Marinators “Mullet”

EP on Full Mullet Records through Phantom Direct

The Ancient Marinators (cute!) are four guys between 29 and 40 who make music that kids 10+ years younger than any of them are playing in the hip, cool and supportive venues for alternative music today. Their age is hidden behind the music but blatant as well, combining Custard and ‘westie rock’ with a Newtown jingle and today’s Brit crop.

“Mullet” is a good debut. The highlights include their very-90s interpretation the Goldman/Stewart ‘classic’ I’m Not In Love despite the intensity-loss by doing the cut-down 2WS version rather than the full album-version. And then there’s the closer Daddy’s a Spider with the full-on Saints (with Chris and Ed) thrash punk hook and attitude but today’s punk length.
