Review – Adam Said Galore “The Driver Is Red”

album on Redline Records thru Shock

Picture, in your mind’s ear, a cross between Big Heavy Stuff, Dead Salesmen, Stephen Robinson, Cake, Something For Kate, Storytime, Do, a more tuneful/tuned-up Peter Fenton, and a jazzy Lamento Suite. This might give you a fair idea of what to expect from the second release in six years from Perth’s Adam Said Galore “The Driver Is Red” on Redline Records through Shock!

Recorded in Perth Western Australia, and recorded and mastered in Chicago Illinois by Casey (Tortoise, Liz Phair) Rice, “The Driver Is Red” is nine mostly-instrumental pieces averaging 6’14”. The mood is somewhat sombre across the record, though not depressing, but the punter trying the band out for the first time through this record would need a while.

It’s hard to put a finger on what drives Adam Said Galore; Sound-alike comparisons and influence suggestions would still leave one none-the-wiser, but “The Driver Is Red” on Redline Records through Shock! borders ever-so-slightly on the correct side of not-my-cuppa; a few more listens might bring it closer…
