Assignment II

What did I get and gain from comparative genomics?

From a review of technology, application and challenges in comparative genomics. It gives the knowledges in the recent of development of large dataset genomic sequences has aided in genomics research area which is due to completely sequenced genomes.

Comparative genomics is important in analyzing, comparing genetic material of different species at the genome level. From the comparison, we can identify sequence  important in gene regulation, predict gene function, explore genetic bases for differences and similarities among species and understand the genetic explaination for how species have adapted to performed their shared or unique biological function and evolution.

The principle of comparative gennomic allows experiments to be carried out in these amenble organisms to identify further pathway components which can help to isolate corresponding human gene. As well as providing tools for functional annotation, these organisms can be used as disease models, another example except example from hand-out lecture the insulin signaling pathway in C.elegans can be disrupted to provided an excellent model of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Ex. Genome comparison in bacteria

A large number of comparative analyzes have been done on either different strains of the same species or different species of the same bacteria. What these analyses have shown is that there is extensive sequence conservation but that within a genus or species there can be 5-25% of DNA unique to each isolate. The comparative analyses of strains are particularly useful in studying the emergence of new disease, new disease phenotypes and develop new anti-bacterial agents in the future.

This advantage can be applied in my fileld (forensic science). In addict drug, Cannabis, which was grown in different places might be identified by genome comparison between 2 cannabis. They might possess DNA unique to each isolate.
