Careers in Forensic Science/Criminalistics?
Forensic Entomolgy - This is the study of insects and other "anthropods" related to legal issues (www.wikipedia.com). During murder investigations, coroners can determine the TOD (time of death) and PMI (post mortem interval) of the body by the appearance, location and time insects lay their eggs.
Forensic Firearm Exam. -The examination of firearms (weapons) along with bullets and other tool mark evidence. You perform scientific methods and lab analysis to form conclusions on the evidence which will later be testified in court.
Forensic Odontology - It's the examination of teeth. It can also be known as forensic dentistry, where you analize friction ridges. For instance forensic odontology analizes teeth impressions and can compare them to individual records or bite marks. This type of forensics is known as about "the toughest biological evidence available". Forensics can also use these friction ridges when DNA fails (due to expense and time) because teeth can survive while other tissue on the body cannot, it still contains mtDNA (DNA inside teeth), which contains genetic material.
Forensic Anthropology - A forensic study that involves the analysis of bones. When these scientists analize the body/bones, they can determine many things such as the following: age, sex, height/basic body type, handedness, ethnicity/racial type, death time frame. This type of forensics includes archealogical digs, examination of plant materials, and more. As you may have seen the hit series Bones on FOX network. It is a show that tells of cases being solved weekly by the main character Dr. Brennan, who is a forensic anthroplogist. If you have seen the show, she resorts to crime scenes and use archeologist methods to recover a body from a scene. They study the bones to determine the things listed above, along with past injury marks left on the remaining tissue (if there is any) or bones.
Crime Scene Inv. - A crime scene investigator or crime scene analyst are the ones who perform the scene work such as documenting the scene, photographing the scene, recovering and collecting evidence and processing "latent" fingerprints. As many of you have seen the hit television series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on the CBS network, it has informed people nationwide of this type of science. You have seen that you don't just observe organisms under a microscope, its like a puzzle. This a job title that accomplishes/achieves a wide range of skills and responsibilites. As a crime scene analyst, it is up to you to collect and recover all the pieces at the crime. The whole case relies on you, because if you don't do your part, no one else really can.
