Chapter 9:A Big Detour

The morning sun welcomed the people of Vermillion City and its visitors. Peter was feeling more than ready to get to his next destination in Fuchsia City. He began the day with a good breakfast and some complaints from Meowth who didn't seem to be a morning Pokmon. "What is it with you and all this travellin' around on foot?!" it protested. Peter simply cleaned his mouth as he cleared his throat. "Simple... I don't have any other form of transportation and I can't afford a bike with today's prices. I need to live with what I'm given."
Meowth closed its eyes as it began to pout. "Okay... But can you at least take it easy on me for a while? I can't handle your little morning routines."
"What's wrong?" Peter replied rather coy. "Not used to rigorous training from a Pokmon trainer?"
"I'm more of a thinker than a fighter. Don't you think so?" Peter shrugged as he finished his toast and eggs. "I think you can learn so many new skills if you just practice with me a little more."
Meowth just shook its head as it took a drink of Peter's glass of milk. "I'm pretty sure I used up all I got to learn how to talk Human." Peter took a look at Meowth as he raised an eyebrow. Meowth felt a little uneasy as it noticed Peter staring. "What?"
"....You got a milk mustache..." Peter said as he got up and went to the counter. Meowth cleaned off its face as it began to follow Peter.

After breakfast, Peter and Meowth began to head out to Fuchsia City via route 11. The fields seemed lush and possably filled with some strong Pokmon that he could catch. Meowth decided to catch a ride on Peter's backpack to keep itself fully rested. "I hope you know that staying there means you'll be battling the next Pokmon we run into," he reminded.
"Sounds like a good deal," Meowth replied. "It doesn't look like there's much to do for now..." Peter rolled his eyes as he continued to travel down the path.

Peter finally reached the checkpoint station that leads to route 12 and route 13. The station clerk seemed a little troubled as he entered the station. "I'm sorry, sir. The path is blocked by a Pokmon so, you'll need to find an alternate route..." the clerk explained.
"A Pokmon?" Peter responded. "What kind of Pokmon could block the path to Fuchsia and Lavender Town?"
"Who cares!" Meowth grumbled as it went to check out the problem. Peter followed Meowth until he caught up with it. Meowth ran face first into the rump of a giant Snorlax. Peter was amazed at the size of this bulking Pokmon. "I see..." he said in amazement. Meowth cleaned off its face from the Snorlax's fur as it looked at the roadblock. "WOW! He's huge!" it said in awe.
"Yeah... Looks like there's no going around this guy. We'll have to go back through Cerulean City for now..." Peter said with a sigh. Meowth looked at Peter awkwardly as he said that. "You can't be serious! That's a long way to go and I HATE THAT TUNNEL!"
"Okay... Then you feel up to battling this Snorlax?" Peter said as he folded his arms. Meowth took a good look at the titan before it. It shook off the timidness as it seemed primed for a fight. "He's no match for me! I'm ready!"

"Well, I'm glad you are, but there's a problem..." Peter said as he pointed to Snorlax. Snorlax hadn't budged for anything since they had been talking. "It looks like its asleep and there's no way we can battle if its like this."
"That's dumb!" Meowth said as it rushed Snorlax. Meowth just bounced off Snorlax's bulk and landed in Peter's arms. "Told you... It'll be easier to catch if we wake it up... But it looks like it's been here for a while..."
"Last night, to be exact..." It was the clerk, who just came to check on Peter.
"You mean it just got here?" Peter asked in worry.
"Yes... It must've came from the mountain range not far from here after eating." the clerk explained. Peter knew that if it just fell asleep then it would be impossible to wake up. "Well, that settles it... We have to go back to Cerulean City and go to Lavender Town."
"That's a long way from here, sir," the clerk said in concern.
"We've got no other choice if we can't move the Snorlax." Peter replied. Meowth hung its head as it began to cry.

"I think I can give you a ride over to Saffron City if you'd like," the clerk said. Meowth looked up with high hopes. "That'll be good. I still think that the entrance is closed, but it's half the trip." Peter said as he picked up Meowth and followed the clerk.

The clerk dropped Peter at the south entrance to Saffron City as he promised. Peter was right about the entrance being closed off as he looked to Meowth. The whining Pokmon said nothing, but the expression on its face was enough to tell Peter it didn't like the idea. "Sorry... This is the only option we got." Peter said as he began to head towards the underground cave. "I still say you need a bike..." Meowth moaned as he began to walk with Peter. The tunnel seemed a bit longer to the two of them since Meowth kept complaining to Peter about the dumb idea of making a tunnel without a rest stop. "For the last time, I never made this tunnel and there's nothing we can do about it right now!" Peter shouted to Meowth as they continued to walk.
"You're right. When we get to Cerulean City, then we can talk to somebody about that dumb tunnel," Meowth replied as it began to come up with some ideas for the tunnel. Peter rolled his eyes as he continued to walk, despite the bickering and the decorative ideas of his companion.

It took a day and a half to reach Cerulean City. But for some reason, it felt longer than that to Peter since he had to listen to Meowth talk and complain all the way. They rested at the Pokmon center for the night until the morning came. Peter wondered about how he and Meowth would make it as a team. He let Nido-G out of his Pokball and began to talk with him. "You think we'll be good to go with Meowth by our side as leader?" he asked. Nido-G looked over at Meowth who was fast asleep on the couch, complaining in its sleep. He then looked over at Peter and growled his answer. "I guess that makes two of us... But do you think I'm going too soft on Meowth?"
Nido-G nodded as it barked softly. "Maybe you're right. I'll sleep on it for now until I can think of what to do about it..." Peter said as he began to get ready for bed. Nido-G curled up beside Peter like normal as they began to call it a night.
