Chapter 6: Detour
Peter seemed to have had quite an interesting day since he left Cerulean City. But at least he was able to fool a couple of team Rocket flunkies for a talking Meowth. He then decided to head out back to Saffron City. "You mind telling me where we're goin'?" Meowth asked.
"I'm just heading back home," Peter replied. Meowth laughed at his response.
"So you can't cut it in the Pokmon league? Too bad. Too bad," it gloated.
"That ain't it. I have to win a badge from Sabrina," Peter said with confidence.
"SABRINA!? You gotta be kiddin'! A psychic Pokmon trainer like her will wipe the floor with you!" Meowth exclaimed.
"You have no confidence in your abilities? What are good for? Conversation?" Peter said glaring at Meowth. Meowth began to twiddle its paws around. "Well, I don't get involved in too much battles," it says truthfully. "But my guys will come back for me and teach you not to mess with Team Rocket!"
"We'll see," Peter said as he made it to the gate.
The gatekeeper was looking a little grumpy when Peter walked by. Peter then noticed that the gate was closed. "Hey! What gives?" he shouted. The gatekeeper looked at Peter oddly, yet rudely.
"Sorry, kid. You can't come pass here!" he exclaimed. Peter wondered what could be the problem.
"Is there some kind of emergency in Saffron?" he asked. The guard just shook his head as he directed Peter to the other exit in which he came in. Peter seemed a little upset. "Great. Now what was his problem?" he wondered. Meowth rolled its eyes as it spoke.
"I dunno. He looked like he was thirsty or sumthin," it said.
"There's no way into Saffron and I'm low on supplies," Peter stated. "You all need to eat."
"WHAT????! No FOOD?!" Meowth said in shock. "What's wrong with you! Can't you supply enough for everyone?!"
"Settle down! I only pack enough for certain journeys. Who knew they closed the enterance to Saffron?" he said in defense. He then wondered how to continue his journey without going to Saffron. He then looked east of him to find a small shack. "Hey. That place over there should help us!" he exclaimed.
"How? It's just a dusty ol' shack," Meowth examined.
"That 'dusty ol shack' happens to be an old underground path. It'll take us past Saffron and back on route," he stated.
"Back on what route? You said you don't have enough food!" Meowth replied.
"True, but there's a fishing hole we can use until we reach Vermillion instead," Peter then headed to the shack.
The underground path seemed to be quite a long way. It truly traveled on as far as the other side of Saffron City with no sign of a Pokmon Center or a shop. Peter had wondered if it was a good idea to travel on to Vermillion City like this. He then noticed Meowth lagging behind. "Guess we should make a pit stop here," he said as he pulled out his last sandwich. Meowth looked at Peter with hungry eyes. Peter then gave the sandwich to it. "You sure? What about you?" Meowth asked.
"It's my Pokmon I'm worried about," he exclaimed. "It would kill me if I didn't take proper care of them. Besides, I can last until we get to the fishing spot."
Meowth wondered about Peter. It never knew that he could be so passionate for Pokmon, or anyone else for that matter. After the meal, Peter got up and looked at Meowth. "You wanna walk? Or would you preffer to ride in your Pokball?" he asked. Meowth looked at him rudely.
"Are you nuts?! I think I can manage without being crampped up in that thing!" it stated. Peter then pulled the Pokball from his necklace and called out Nido-G. "Then you won't mind a little companion for a bit of a jog," he said. Nido-G looked at Meowth as he began to jog right behind his new commrade. "What's up with this!?" it shouted.
"Don't take it too hard. Me and G always hike accross this path. But he'll keep you on your toes in case you lose your pace," he said. Peter then began to jog as Nido-G poked Meowth in the tail.
"Hey! Watch it with that! You can hurt someone!" it yelled.
"That's the point!" Peter's echo rang through the tunnel. Meowth had no choice but to lose the weight of the sandwich.
The three finnaly made it out of the tunnel safely. Peter looked at the south enterance to find it is also closed. "What is with the shut down?" he wondered. He then turned his attention to Mewoth who had just popped out of the exit. Nido-G followed right behind looking a little tired as well. Peter then reached into his pack and pulled out some ointment. "Your gonna need this," he said to Meowth tossing the tube to it.
"What for?" Meowth asked.
"To lower the swelling and kill the poison. You lost your pace alot back there," he replied while recalling Nido-G. Meowth just rubbed the ointment on his tail while grumbling. Peter then looked south to where the fishing spot was. "We're not too far off," he said.
"About time," Meowth thought to itself. Peter looked at Meowth and wondered if he can train Meowth. The jog in the tunnel may have lossened up his loudmouth companion, but it's attitude was to be expected. He wanted to show Meowth that he wanted to make it the best Pokmon he ever trained.
"This may take a while," he thought as they continued to the fishing spot...
