![]() The art and happenings in the life of Caroline McDonough, a photographer based in Jackson, Michigan. An open letter to my academic peers ![]() Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.
John Ruskin We live in Ohio. Most of us have lived in Ohio for well over one year, and thus will likely have experienced many of the region's shifts in weather patterns. So why do we persist in complaining about them? I mean seriously, guys... we're all here at BGSU seeking after a higher education, but apparently, we haven't got the deductive skills to realize that all one has to do to escape the insanity is to move. Now I get that a lot of us actually like living in Ohio, despite the humidity, and the bugs, and the forecasts of snow on Easter... despite the tornadoes and the occasional frozen strawberries*... really, those are some of the things that make Ohio charming. It wouldn't be our state if we didn't risk frostbite in April or go tubing on Buckeye Lake in November. There are places where the weather is boring and predictable. But we're hardy Ohio stock, most of us. We laugh at Californians in parkas when it's 65° outside. Our lips chap badly when we go west of Missouri. This is part of Ohio's culture, like Amish people and their buggies and how 40% of our population is filled with pride when they hear Carmen Ohio, even if they didn't attend OSU. So get over the weather, wusses. It's just a little rain. *Strawberry season in Ohio is June-July. 2007-04-03 20:42:01 GMT
