More from my diary...
June 13th, Tombigbee waterway
We are at mile 14 on the Tombigbee. Left Mobile, Alabama behind us. Last night we had a horriffic anchorage in Mobile Bay (actuall, Bon Secout Bay). It's incredibly shallow there and we had south-west winds so we were beating the waves, driving straight into them in the narrow ship channel we had to stick to. Then, as we got settled in our rough and choppy anchorage, we experienced a wind shift - this time it came from the east, bringing with it up to 40 knots of gusts and cold air. Bob steared against the storm with the engine. I was violently sick, thew up and as I did I saw some bioluminescent stuff in the water under our boat contrasted by the blackness of the water at night. Really cool stuff, no idea what it was!
Tonight we are planning on anchoring at the TennSaw cut. Buddy's also had a bad night on Mobile Bay, today that we are on the river he's much better and perky again...

Stayed a Old Lock #1 last night. The autopilot adds a great feature to the boat and certainly it is a luxerious thing to have for the capt'n :) Last night at old lock #1 we met a father and his 10-year old son who were camping at the campground there for a couple of days. They stopped by the boat and gave us amaing red beans and sausage from Mississippi, as that's where they were from. Very spicy! They had some left over and we obviously looked like we needed some, he he - (Bob's been taking really good care of our food situation! He cooks something delicious every evening.) Tonight we are heading for Bashi Creek. Did our first lock at Coffeeville this morning. Got lifted up some 22 feet.
June 16th, Tombigbee
What a nightmare Bashi Creek turned out to be! Once we got there we were stopped before entering the small creek by this guy on a jetski. Telling us, they have a boat race on. We told them we'd anchor in that creek, just passed the boat ramp and he said that would be ok. Marine Patrol was there, too. Anchored using bow and stern anchor. Plenty deep. But this terrible speed boat race... They were only setting up for it as it was on for the next day, poeple were putting their speed boats in the water and testing them. Found out, this is a "dry county", meaning no alcohol allowed (only after we walked around with our last bottle of Corona in our hands). No trouble though. But man, that's worse than what they do in England, closing the pubs at 11 PM.
Saw thousands of lightning bugs in the trees to the left and right to our anchorage before going to sleep (twinkle twinkle little star)... Need to make over 65 miles today. Going to Demopolis. Already at mile 179.4 and it's only 11.43 AM - that's because my lovely husband got us up at 5 this morning!! --- I am quitting if he keeps this up ---- He he!
