Belié Belcan

Another very important Loa of The 21 Divisions is Belie Belcan who is seen in Saint Micheal the Arcangle. His feast day is the 29th of September. His colours are green and red. Belié Belcan is a very old Loa. There for he is very respected and higly regarded. He is very wise and his advice is often saught out when in dispare.

When he takes possetion of a horse the body seems to hunch some as Belié Belcan is a "short" Loa. Belie walks around limbing one one foot; his right leg is usually bent back and he walks with a cane. After he arrives he gives the general salutation:"Bonswa a la Societé!" Yet Belié Belcan always adds something else:"Mwen sé Belié Belcan", meaning "I am Belié Belcan". He then puts on his fulas (kerchifs): a green one on his head, a red one across the chest, from the left shoulder and then another green one across the right one. After he asks for his tabaqué (cigar), and finally his tafía (rum). After all this, he is ready to cunsult.

Belie Belcan is a strong father figgure. He offers great advice to his children and those with whom he is dealing, and is not afraid to show tough love. He is a very wise Lwa and very aware of life's twists and tuns and how easy it is for us as humans to give into them. He often would sit with a person for hours ofering his advice on how the person could make their own life better for themselves. His aide is greatly inlisted when dealing with enemies and in situations where a person is really affecting one's life. He is very quick to stand up for what's right and defend he or she who deserves to be defended. This could actually be something rather difficult about this Lwa in that he is rather OVER-protective at times. He might remove someone from our lives even if we didn't want him to just because he thought that person posed some sort of problem, conflict or just wasn't right for the one he is protecting. He is refered to as "El viejo" (the Old Man) out of love in the religion. He has some what of a low tone voice, but he speaks loud enogh You will understand what he says.

Belie is also the Lwa most commonly used when makin resguardos (protective charms and talismans). These are little talismans usually wrapped in black or red cloth the contents of which is unknown (and shall so ramain) to the owner of the talisman. It offers them protection both phisically and spiritually.

Belie is part of the Rada rite (Division Blanca) and is an air Lwa. He has close tides to Candelo Sidife who is his compadre. When they are both present at a party they will often greet eachother in a very happy "hey-long-time-no-see,-man" manner. They work together spiritually to break strong jobs; Candelo burning away all evil with his fire and Belie fighting for the person with his sword and dagger.

His biggest "head ache" (so to say) is dealing with Anaisa Pyè, his wife. He frequently says he has to clean up after Anaisa because she could be messy in what she does. She might give someone one thing they asked for but Belie knows better and has to interject. He also has to watch out for her at parties and make sure she is behaving herself and not getting too carried away.

Belie is a stern and serious Lwa but also has his comical side, as well. He's known to lighten the mood by making a comical statement here and there. He is not as agresive or violent in nature as many male Lwas are, he is after all, much older than them but this does not mean that he is to be taken lightly. He's been known to tare down alters with his sword, lift heavy people while limping on his one foot, and is capable of punishing his children and horses harshly. Usually Belie's punishments include some sort of permanent mark on one's body as a reminder.

In most homes one would often find the image of Saint Micheal above the door; this is done for protection. One places his image above one's door and asks him to protect it and guard it from all forms of evil, human or otherwise. In the Bible the Arc Ancgel Micheal is said to be the guardian of the celestial militia and guardian of the church (those who believe). Belie, too, is the guardian of the 21 Divisions along with Ogoun Balendjo. Belie Belcan serveys over the horses, altars, services and spiritual works done.

A service one could do for Belie is light a green candle with a glass of rum and a cigar. Also he likes to be offered red soda pop (particuallrly Refresco Country Club de Frambuesa). A good spell one could do with him is to get rid of evil, or negativity in the form of a revocation. You place a saucer plate (a small plate) over a glass of water and salt and flip it over so that the cup is upside down on the plate. If you know the names of those whom are trying to harm you or of anyone who might be concidered your enemy you could write them down on a pice of paper in pencil and place the paper in the glass of water and salt, too. You take a candle and cut off the tip and remove some of the wax from the bottom end so you could light it. This candle is then lit (upside down) on top of upside down glass of water. This is done usually at 12 am or pm and is done for nine days reciting the prayer: "Revocation to San Micheal the Archangle". This is very effective in returning evil to its sender if one is trying to do harm to you. Here's a song we sing for him; he sings one part and all present sing the rest (call and response):

Belié: Yo soy Belié,...I am Belié,
All: Belié,
Belié:Belié Belcan,
All:Toné,
Belié:Yo soy chiquito,...I'm short,
