c. 3.49 billion years ago, Pilbara region, Western Australia.
A shallow bay at low tide, just under 3.5 billion years ago. Over many decades,
the actions of tiny cyanobacteria have created clusters of large dome-shaped
stromatolites that represent the earliest macroscopic structures to be created
by life. Today, this part of the world lies far from the sea, at a remote
site in the dry Eastern Pilbara, somewhat inappropriately called "North Pole".
