c. 40 million years ago, Antarctica
A selection of marine life based on material from New Zealand and Seymour
Island, Antarctica. A mother whale, (
Zygorhiza sp.) desperately
tries to shield her baby from the monstrous 10 m shark
Carcharocles
auriculatus . Man-sized penguins (
Anthropornis nordenskjoeldi)
flee in terror. Back then, Antarctica and the seas surrounding it were
a lot warmer than they are today.
