Giant Cuttlefish (
Sepia apama)
Distribution - temperate-subtropical coastal waters off southern Australia.
Habitat - Rocky reefs, caves and seagrass meadows.
Depth range - 0-50m
At a metre in length, the world's biggest cuttlefish and a proud Australian
native! Probably the most common temperate cuttle species in Australia, but
difficult to spot when alive owing to it's fantastic camoflague - the surfboard-like
shells are familiar to beachcombers and budgie-owners however. A docile and
curious critter - when diving it's in the cooler months it's not unusual
to get one of these guys tagging along behind you - the trick is to spot them.
