IS
THE CAVALIER FOR YOU?
The
aim of this page is to give you an insight of
what life is really like with a Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel. We hope that from the
information here, you will be assisted in making
the very important decision of "Is The
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel For You"?
The
Cavalier is a smallish dog, usually around 12 to
14 inches at the shoulder, and around 15 to 18 lb.
in weight. They have a single, silky coat, which
is quite easy for you to look after yourself.
They do moult (shed hair) periodically though,
but with regular grooming this can be kept under
control, you might have to vacuum more often
though! They are a "drop eared" dog
with long ear fringing, they do not have hair in
the ear canals, so with routine care, they should
not cause any problems. Temperament wise, they
should be a very happy little dog, with no
tendency towards timidness or aggression. Being a
well constructed little dog, with no "extremes"
in their shape and build, they should also be
physically sound.

They
are a person orientated dog and definitely need
to be part of the family and live indoors. They
do of course need fresh air and exercise, they
love to play in the garden, go for walks and car
rides. Cavaliers hate being alone for hours on
end, so people who work very often decide to have
two Cavaliers, to keep each other company while
they are away from home.

Cavaliers
love to sit on your lap and sit in your favourite
chair. Also if you let them, they will love to
sleep on your bed. They do become your constant
shadow and follow you around the home. If you
ever want to get out of the home without them
knowing - forget it! Just a tip - don't rattle
your car keys - they will be at the door faster
than you. Cavaliers are fun loving family dogs.
They are fairly easy to train, and take kindly to
obedience, agility and dog oriented sports. They
are not "yappie" or destructive as a
rule, unless bored or living in unsuitable
conditions. They will always let you know when
someone is around, being quite good little "watchdogs",
but do expect them to welcome all visitors,
whether they be coming for dinner, or to steal
the stereo!!
Before
you decide to get a Cavalier, ensure that you
have fully secure fencing, because Cavaliers are
"houdini's" and can get through the
smallest gap or hole. Once out they have NO road
sense, if they see "Fred" across the
road, they are off to say hello, with no thought
for the consequences, which could be tragic!!
Being such beautiful, friendly little dogs, they
can be a temptation to the unscrupulous, who
would not hesitate to steal your dog if they
found it in an unguarded situation, such as
roaming the streets, or unwatched in a front yard
with low fencing. To save yourself the heartache
of a lost Cavalier, and for your dogs protection,
it is essential to have a fully secure backyard.

Cavaliers,
as with people, come with different personalities.
Some can be quieter than others, and would
therefore suit a quiet household or single person.
Some can be full of action, and some in between!!
They should all have the same things in common
though, and that is an outgoing and friendly
nature with the tail always wagging and unlimited
love to give to their human family. Temperament
is a very important part of the Cavalier, add
that and their beauty together and that is what
makes them a CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL.
