Technical Notes

When designing a front-wheel-drive chassis, getting a transverse mounted 5-cyl. engine and the transmission into the same end of the car presents both packaging and weight-bias concerns. Volvo's answer is an aluminum front sub-frame and engine. The block is open-deck with iron liners. It's split horizontally at the crankshaft so the main bearing cap web actually forms the lower half of the block. With the aluminum sump, the whole assembly adds up to a very stiff structure. The camshafts are driven by a single belt with an oil pressurized automatic tensioner. The dual-tract intake manifold is vacuum actuated, controlled by a duty-cycle solenoid valve. Engine management is Bosch Motronic 4.3 except for vehicles sold in California, Massachusetts and New York, which are equipped with Bosch 4.4 to meet local emissions regulations using all the same components. With the 4-spd. automatic transmission in Winter/Wet mode, it starts out in third gear and the optional traction control selectively applies a front brake to control wheel spin below 25 mph. Three other versions of this chassis share the same engine and automatic transmission, but the T-5 and R models are both turbocharged.
