5-3-5 and 3-1-5 codes [850][94] ... posted by GKL on Thursday, 22 February 2001, at 3:16 p.m.
Over the past few weeks the check engine light has been coming on with
the codes being 5-3-5 and 3-1-5.
From what I've read, 315(EVAP system) is commonly caused by a faulty EVAP
valve but I'm not sure
how the 535(turbo control valve signal) fits in. Is this one problem or
two separate things?

I am all too familiar with the 535 code on my 94 854 Turbo. It sounds like
the issue you have may be two
separate problems, but I could be wrong. The turbo control valve signal
error (535) could be a bad vacuum
line going to or from the turbo to the valve. The valve in question is
located on your air-box on a rubber
mounting of sorts. It is round and will have an electrical connection on
the left side (Facing vehicle from
left fender looking at air box.) and 3 vacuum/pressure lines going into
it on the right. The hoses are
color-coded Blue (top) Yellow (middle) Red (bottom). I am going off of
memory here, but I think that is
how they are. (The valve is color coded with paint dots on the front by
the nipples.) As far as the hoses to
the turbo, I know that the red hose goes to the bottom of the turbo (high-pressure
line), the yellow goes to
the wastegate actuator valve, and the blue goes to the nipple (right after
the MAF sensor) on the large
diameter air input duct going to the turbo. Odds are one of the hoses are
not good and are leaking air. I
have replaced all of mine in addition to the white coded EGR valve hose,
which is in the same area and
leads all the way up to the front of the engine. Also, I found the elbow
on the small diameter hard plastic
pipe in front of the turbo to be badly fatigued and pinching itself off.
Once I replaced all vacuum lines with
a real high quality vacuum line, the car's MPG went from 19.4 to 22.5+
and performance is 110% better.
BTW, the car has 170000 miles on it and is a 1994 854 Turbo. Hope this
helps with the 535 code. I think in
all, I used some 10+ feet of vacuum hose and 10 stainless hose clamps.
As far as the other code... sorry, I haven't had that one yet.

i had the same two codes last week the mechanic tested my evap valve and
upon testing put everything
back together then all of a sudden a 535 code. The mechanic took another
look and found that he had
accidently unhook the wire to the turbo control valve. Take anotheer look
the too are close together that
may do the trick.
