On November 24th 1995 I was operated on by a surgeon. In 1993 he found
that my liver was performing poorly and I had a GGT of 304. I went to a
liver specialist who told me not to have the surgery until my liver had
improved. He also wrote to the surgeon and told him not to do the
surgery. A week before my operation the surgeon told me that the
specialist had been overreacting and everything was fine. I believed him
and let him operate on me even though my GGT had risen to 528. I was not
told of this at the time or I would have said no. The day after my
surgery I suffered liver and renal failure. I started producing ascites
fluid and developed septecemia. From the 24th to December the 4th I
hardly saw the surgeon but he got in a friend, a GP who specialised in
Diabetes and even though he wasn't qualified called himself an
endocrinologist. They put me on diuretics and that was all the treatment
they gave me. Basically the surgeon knew he had made a mistake and they
left me there to die. My wife was frantic and started ringing doctors
but no one would come. On the 4th she rang the liver specialist who came
in and found me in a parlous state and transferred me to an ICU unit as
there wasn't one at the hospital. He proceeded to save my life but I am
left with a 14 inch abdominal hernia and can do very little physically
and my life has been destroyed. I was 37 when this happened and I am
still trying to get the doctor into court. Medical defence has tried
every delaying tactic possible. I hope to have him in court in June and
after that I will give you the names and the places. Yours
Faithfully Lee Turbill.
