A TODDLER who was taken to a doctor's surgery after burning her hand on an oven door was given a pain-killing injection and died the next day, her distraught parents claim.

Fifteen-month-old Carmen Currie was taken to a doctor's surgery on Brisbane's southside by her parents, Storm Kerr and Peter Currie, on Monday afternoon following the accident.

Ms Kerr, 21, said Carmen had screamed throughout the examination and the doctor and nurse had elected to give her a pain-killing injection.

She and her partner were told that it would make the toddler "a bit groggy", Ms Kerr claimed.

When Carmen was brought home, about 3.30pm, she could not walk or crawl, she said.

Between 10pm and 11pm that day, 27-year-old Mr Currie checked on his daughter. That was the last time he saw her alive.

Ms Kerr said she woke up at 2.30am with "a funny feeling" and asked her partner to check on Carmen.

"I knew she was dead from the moment I picked her up," he said.

"She was cold, stiff and blue."

Ms Kerr said she tried to resuscitate Carmen before the ambulance arrived, but failed.

She alleged the doctor had not asked whether the little girl was allergic to any drugs before giving Carmen the injection.

Last night, the doctor had gone "on leave" and could not be contacted.

Now the couple must wait for the results of a blood test that might help to ascertain the cause of death.

Detectives investigating the case were unable to comment about Carmen's death yesterday.

Metro south regional Crime Co-ordinator Inspector Peter Scalan said detectives were awaiting the results of the toxicology report from the autopsy before deciding how to proceed. The initial post mortem examination failed to find a cause of death but it is understood a needle mark was found.

Ms Kerr said she had been baking biscuits when Carmen crawled up from behind and put her hand on the oven door.

She and Mr Currie were being comforted by friends last night and were making arrangements for Carmen's funeral on Monday.
