Midsummer (midsommar) is a very special time in Scandinavia. Midsummer celebrations have been a major part of Scandinavian culture for hundreds of year, from before the Viking times. There are many aspects of the midsummer celebration that are similar to pagen times. It is now mostly based on Christian traditions in Scandinavia. In Norway and Denmark, large bonfires are set to welcome the summer season, In Sweden there is the tradition of the so-called May Pole. It is raised and dancing and celebrations are performed around the pole. Winter is a very hard time in most parts of Scandinavia, Little wonder then, why the Scandinavians celebrate the summer solstice. Midsummer celebrations usually are held the Friday (Midsommarafton) and Saturday closest to the summer solstice. OSSSM has a midsummer fest as close to the solstice as possible. We have dancing, games, good fellowship, and a great deal of good Scandinavian food. | |
