Question: What is the History of Ozark Mountain Racing Association?
Answer: Boy are we glad that you asked!
Well, you see it all started out like this...
Back in the 80's Springfield was home to a great 12 scale RC Racing Club known as SARCAR, Springfield Association of Radio Control Auto Racers, and the 10 scale buggies were needing
a home club too, and thus SARCAR Off-Road Club was born. SARCAR Off-Road was skippered by Mike Bayless and it grew into a fair amount of notoriety. In those days we hosted major Trophy Races
including the Pepsi Challenge, the ROAR Region 5 Championships, and many more events to numerous to mention here. On the Pics Page you can find a link to a sampling of trophies from races back in the days of Ronald Reagan and
"Risky Business" shades. Now, how about getting Mike to write a retrospective all about Off-Road in the 80's and maybe clear up some of my recollections? Back to the story, or my version of it at least. That was the 80's and all, and like all things it came to an end. Mike had just became a dad again for the 4th and 5th time all at once... twins.
RC Racing had to take a backseat for a while but the passion never died. Through-out the early 2000's Mike and his son Matthew tore up a few tracks indoors at varying venues, and even built a buggy track
in their backyard... dirt was in the blood. Now that the twins are thinking college, Mike is thinking Off-Road Racing. Fresh from a meeting with the Mayor of Ozark Missouri, the Greater Springfield Area Sports Commission, and the Ozark Park Board, a plan was created to launch Ozark Mountain Racing Association.
The new Ozark Mountain Racing Association Speedway has been built at Neal Grubaugh Park with help financal help from Hobbytown USA in Ozark Missouri. OZMRA continues it's growth in thanks to the Missouri
Sports Hall of Fame sponsoring our Annual Marquis Race.
Members of the Original and Off-Road incarnations of Springfield Missouri's SARCAR are encouraged to drop us a note and maybe a photo or two, we would love to hear from ya all!
