Team Activities
Whooo succeeds and how do they do it?  This rubric conveys the guidelines for all team presentations.

indicates required activities.  There are three required individual activities.
You must choose two additional activities.  You will complete a total of five team activities.

TEAM ACTIVITY 1

Adopt an Owl  Go to www.adoptabird.org and read the profiles of the owls eligible for adoption. Choose the owl that you want our class to adopt.  Write a persuasive essay to convince your classmates that the raptor you chose should be the one we sponsor.  Remember, Adopt-a-Bird is a wildlife sponsorship program; you do not receive the actual bird.  Use the rubric to help you write an effective essay.

TEAM ACTIVITY 2

Owl Art  Use  materials you have at home and in the classroom to create a life size owl of your choice.  Write an expository essay describing the owl's habitat, its role in the environment, possible threats to its survival, and projected outcomes if the population of the owl decreases or ceases.  Use the Thought Web to organize your ideas and the rubric to ensure success.

TEAM ACTIVITY 3

Speaking Out  Use a poster to speak out against the ways humans endanger the lives and future of owls.  Create a slogan that emphasizes your view point.  Let your poster show your suggestions for solving the problems, along with a message telling why the owl and all of Earth's creatures must be protected.

TEAM ACTIVITY 4

Ad It Up  Write real estate ads for Animal Pal News.  Help owls find suitable places to live through these ads.

TEAM ACTIVITY 5

Owl Economics  Design an owl awareness logo for a t-shirt and cap.  Determine the production cost and decide on a profitable price.  Locate an owl organization that the money can be donated to.

TEAM ACTIVITY 6

Give a Hoot  Research to discover which North American owl species are endangered or threatened.  Choose one of the endangered species to focus your research on.  How much area does a pair of owls require for their survival?  How much area would five pairs of owls require?  Use your background knowledge and scientific reasoning to predict what would happen to the owl population if there was too little space?  Choose a method to report your findings.  You might find the PowerPoint rubric helpful.

TEAM ACTIVITY 7

Whooo's Living in North America  Go to WWW.Maps101.Com.  Use our classroom username and password  (posted by our computer center) to log in.  Locate and print a map of North America.  Use your owl research to locate and label different states and providences where owls live.

TEAM ACTIVITY 8

The Barn Owl  There are many species of barn owls.  They are birds of prey and come out at night.  Use The Barn Owl page to gather and organize information to be used to create a pamphlet.

TEAM ACTIVITY 9

Stuck on Owls  Use your knowledge of owls to create commemorative stamps.  Begin with rough drafts; after the sketches are completed and discussed create the final for display.  The edges of the paper should resemble perforation, add a .39 amount, and other details should also be included.

TEAM ACTIVITY 10

Explore More  Should lawmakers renew the Endangered Species Act?  Explain why or why not.  Find out how members of Congress from your state voted and why.  Check out Owls are our Neighbors.
