Summer Olympics Discussion
Beonca Aims
During the two week period for the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, the Slytherins were discussing the games and participants. There was even a poll as to which venue youd like to be in, see other article. The biggest news was Michael Phelps attempt and finally winning the eight gold medals he was going for and the suspected age of the Chinese gymnast. Here is some of the banter.

Snape: I rather enjoy the Olympics, both summer and winter games.
Anyone seen the relay last night? The 4 x 100 meter?
There are not too many sports of the Olympics I do not like, though I was not interested in the basketball game at all. I do not watch professional basketball, so why watch a bunch of professional players play in the Olympics.
I do enjoy most other venues though, the ones I get on the channels I get, anyway.

Gred: That relay was amazing. Phelps was freaking out of the sidelines too.
*is a slightly avid watcher*

Tani: I read about the events online the next morning, though, and I was inordinately pleased when I learned that the first U.S. gold medal was in women's fencing. Not because the U.S. won a gold medal, but because it was fencing.
Snape: I do not get msnbc or oxygen, so I only been able to watch NBC's nightly coverage. And Phelps was a mad man on the sidelines with that relay race. And his first of eight golds! He won another last night which ties him with Carl Lewis and Spitz and two others for holding the all time Olympic record of gold medals....and he is not done yet. If he meets his personal goal of eight these games, he will be the ONLY one with 15 gold medals in Olympic history.
The men gymnastic team won bronze last night, it was special because they were written off an not even being contenders! Never write us off!

Bee: I saw most of it, but it was getting LATE! Glad to hear they won bronze. I also am a fan of M. Phelps!!!! I think he's yummy!
The girl's team gymnastics are tonight! Hope its not too late in the evening to watch it all! I can't stay up past 10.

Jessie: I haven't been able to follow the Olympics more than just watching highlights on the News or in the newspapers. We only get the total coverage on SBS which has all of the NBC stuff and that only starts at around nine, but by the time you take out commentary, and what not at the start...
We've been keeping a medal tally at my school any way so..
I believe Australia won Silver in womens doubles in diving or whatever it's called. Something I actually saw on TV. XD
Yay for gymnastics!

Riley: I just started watching the coverage a few moments ago, and I was like: "Mom! Bela Karloyi is the most Italian person ever!"
She blinked at me, and went: "He's Romanian..."
Just thought I'd share. xD
I love watching the gymnastics. It's very interesting, yet fills me with a sense of apprehension when someone does something complicated, because I'm like: "Oh no! They're going to fall!"

Gred: I watched the Aussie/Spain guys tennis match. It was awsome *admits he knows nothing about tennis*

Snape: Phelps won two more gold medals last night, one in a relay race which, by the by they totally broke the world record, he is a dolphin in the water! He lead off and lead the field by miles! Giving his team such a lead they would have had to fall asleep in the water to not take that race.
I think the judges were bais toward the US gymnastic team, they won sliver after the Chinese. But we have individual gymnastic this week some time and I think we got a couple girls that will win gold.
I watched the beach volleyball, men's, and the US moved up or into the next level.
Diving is coming up, that's always interesting...

Gred: The gymnastics really upset me. I think they judged the US harder because they've done really well in the last few Olympics, and the Chinese hadn't. The US should have had that medal..... but that's my opinion....
For women's beach volleyball, really, May and Walsh are doing great (as usual). I haven't watched much.
Baseball is on right now....so I'm not paying attention.

BEE: I was so mad at the judges during the team gymnastics. What a crock!
And they tried the same crap during the individual 'all arounds', but the two American girls hung in there, though the scoring sucked. The Chinese girls kept making such obvious mistakes, the judges figured it was not safe to give them everything like the team scoring. I mean really, anyway, WE TOOK THE GOLD AND SILVER!!! So..............take that China!
Phelps has his SEVEN GOLD MEDALS!!! Tying him with Mark Spitz! And he is now he has the most gold medals of any Olympiad in all history! Tonight he is going for his last one, its a team relay.
I love watching the beach volleyball with Misty May and Kate Walsh, didn't think I would like it as much as I did, but it's cool! Go USA!

Riley: That finish last night as amazing. 50.58 to 50.59. Phelps won by one one hundredth of a second, and I most definitely was amazed. The whole race was amazing!
Cavic's coach filed a complaint, and I was so glad that the officials ignored it. xD Also, before the race, Cavic apparently said that it would be good for him to win, and if he won, it would be good for Phelps as well.
Jerk.
So I was glad that their complaint got deferred.
And...
Did anyone see the Women's 800m? Rebecca Adlington ripped Janet Evans' world record to shreds. It was amazing.

Tani: Thank God for the Internet. I'm able to watch it--live--from the NBC website, so I'm currently watching the Men's Field Hockey match. It's extremely weird without audio commentary, but it's not so bad. Ten minutes to go in the first part of the match, and so far no scores either way. Quite exciting, though.

Gred: PHELPS GOT EIGHT!
I'm happy. Although, I was getting upset with our volleyball teams today. Our indoor girls were making little mistakes the whole match. It got annoying. Then the beach volleyball, one of them made like 5 service errors in a row!!

Gred: Did you see the Womens Gymnastics last night? It was the uneven bars. Nastia got silver when she should have gotten gold, the whole thing was upsetting. I'm not gonna try to continue this rant.

Snape: All Right! PHELPS GOT HIS EIGHT! I just think the kid worked hard and has some great relay partners! Good for him, he deserved it.
Now...onto gymnastics. Since when do they award gold for falling on your knees? Nastia's vault was perfect and NO steps, lands and nails it. Then the Chinese girl comes along, and lands, falls on her knees, gets up and they give her gold? Can someone explain that to me? I think the girls are being robbed. How stupid.
And men's gymnastics is not any better....

Gred: Exactly! That little twelve year-old Chinese girl fell and everythng!!! That was Nastia's win. She was great.
I dunno if I'm gonna continue watching gymnastics after this. I'm getting upset everytime I watch them. Shawn and Nastia are wonderful though. I haven't watched much of the men's. I'm either too fed up to continue watching gymnastics or I've gotten distracted one way or another.
That tie breaker was pathetic.
Anyways, I need to check when volleyball is on. That's my favorite but I've been lacking.

So, you see, we had some rousing discussion and can't wait until the Winter Olympics!

Interview With A Newbie: Wildas Haim's Edition
By Luna Lovegood and Wildas Haim
Luna Lovegood: Hello! How are you today?
Wildas Haim: I'm doing very well, thank you.  However, I'm getting tired of this literally infernal heat.
LL: Who has been most helpful to you overall?
WH: Really, in the insanity that is the House of Ravenclaw, I've had to rely on myself and my own good sense.  Plus some books have helped me, but mostly I've survived through keen observation and distillation of the facts.
LL: What do you enjoy doing most in the common room?
WH: Reading, and observing people while pretending to read.
LL: What is your favorite game?
WH: Set-the-peasant's-belongings-on-fire.  It's great fun.  So is Toy-psychologically-with-the-peasant.
LL: How are the people around here?
WH: Certifiably insane.  From what I've garnered, some Ravenclaw date squids and other large marine animals, whilst others prefer to eat their children.  Some of them also have no backbone, while others are all too eager to supplement a person's diet with some iron - in the form of a rusty knife.  There does seem to be a sense of loyalty to people with no clear extraordinaire traits.
LL: Have you made any new friends?
WH: Well, I wouldn't exactly call them friends, but there are about 3 people I have met who don't wish to kill me.  Yet.
LL: Do you belong to any clubs?
WH: No, I do not as of yet, but I plan to in the Fall.
LL: Care to tell me a bit about yourself?
WH: Well, I'm a fourth year transfer student from Sveringard, a school in my homeland of Sweden.  We believe that world experience is very important to the formation of a wizard's mind, and thus we take school for 9 years, three years at three different schools - the first three at Sveringard, the next three at a school of our parent's choosing, and the last three at a school of our own choosing.  Also, I am the heir to a very large library-based fortune, and my goal in life is to know anything and everything that can be known.
LL: Anything you wish to add?
WH: Yes.  I have a special message to everyone here at Hogwarts EXCEPT for Erica, Jacyn, Arya, Jolie, Eireann, Luna, and Gwen: I'm a grail snake!
LL: Thanks. :D
WH: You are very welcome.
Interview With A Newbie: Kayla Avalon's Edition
By Luna Lovegood and Kayla Avalon
Luna Lovegood: Hello! How are you today?
Kayla Avalon: Hiya! I'm pretty good, thanks for asking. ^_^
LL: Who has been most helpful to you overall?
KA: Definitely Olive Snitzberry. She explained pretty much everything, and was extremely friendly.
LL: What do you enjoy doing most in the Common Room?
KA: Hmm, probably reading, listening to music, or hanging out with friends. Once I make some that is, haha.
LL: What is your favorite game?
KA: Probably Spam-o-lot. Lots of randomness going on there.
LL: How are the people around here?
KA: They seem really friendly and awesome.
LL: Have you made any new friends?
KA: Not yet, haven't really been open or forward. But I hope to soon!
LL: Do you belong to any clubs?
KA: I don't belong to any. Not really a club person.
LL: Care to tell me a bit about yourself?
KA: Sure! I'm a really friendly person, pretty loyal as well. I like listening to music - it's practically my life - as well as reading. I also attempt to draw every so often. I also usually try to make everyone else happy before myself. I'm shy, but generous, and will try to help someone out when I can. Oh, I hope this isn't too long.
LL: Anything you wish to add?
KA: Go Ravenclaw!

LL:How are the people around here?
EC: Everyone is so friendly and helpful with anything I need.  I love it!

Randomness in Spam
By Ravenclaw
Luna: This place is really quiet
Summer & Erica: Yeah
Luna: It's so...not Ravenclaw-y.
Summer: *gulp* Are....are we being...taken over?
Luna:  ! By what? Hufflepuffs? XD
Erica:   by?
Luna: It's just the type of thing they will do. Take over Ravenclaw.
Erica: Because?
Luna: Because they're evil like that! Why else? Who else would take us over? Slytherins? :p
Lucius: PENSHIRES! THE EVIL PENSHIRES! They've already copied us! Now, they're kidnapping all of our active members so we become an inactive house! Then, PAD will do away with our house and make Penshire the new Ravenclaw!!!!
Penshire in charge of the plan to overthrow Ravenclaw: *hidden in darkness* He knows too much. :ph43r:
Luna: *looks questioning over to some Penshires* I think you're right, Lu.
Lucius: HA! I knew someone would believe me someday! *eye twitches* *puts on aluminum helmet*
Luna & Erica:
Summer: Okay, I'm going. You guys better make sure Ravenclaw's still here when I'm back :tease:
Luna: *puts on a Penshire badge* ...oops? :innocent:
