| Backpacking: Camping Clothing - Socks
By Gawyn Crossguard In last month's article, I talked about the best kind of boots to wear. Even though, it was an April Fool's article, there was a lot of truth to it. For instance, the whole bit about wearing boots that fit was all true. In this issue, we'll discuss the importance of socks. Socks help to prevent blisters by adding a cushion between feet and boots. When backpacking or camping, once should always make sure to wear socks when wearing footwear. Not wearing socks is just begging for an unpleasant experience. Think about it, a person is walking in the woods or climbing a mountain, or some other terrain with his/her own body weight plus anywhere from five to fifty-five pounds. That's a lot of stress and wear on his/her feet. Not to mention the fact that bacteria has a field day in shoes, especially when there aren't any socks there to remove the colonies. If one is just thinking of wearing regular tennis shoes, then low cut socks are fine. Low cuts are your ankle and no-show socks. They're convenient because they take up less space than other socks might. Low cut socks are not good for boots, because, though they will protect the feet, they leave the calves exposed to the upper part of the boot. My personal choice for socks when backpacking is crew cut. They are excellent for all kinds of footwear. They protect the feet, as well as the calves, and so reduce the risk of developing a blister anywhere near the feet. They take up just a little more room than low cut socks, and are a little warmer, but being a little warmer is preferable to festering feet sores. |

| The Favorite Colors of Gryffindor
By Kaylee Keigwin Sure, this sort of poll has been conducted thousands of times, where the interviewer asks the favorite color, and the interviewee replies with a simple "red, blue, green, etc." So what makes this poll different? Well, it was done in the amazing house of Gryffindor, of course! With fourteen colors to choose from, fifteen Gryffindors decided to take part in this poll. It turns out that yellow, gold, emerald, pink, brown, white, and "shiny colors" are not favored in our house; on the contrary, red, black, and silver were tied for the favorite. Blue and gray followed behind, with two votes each, while purple and green had each obtained a vote. Check back next month for another "typical favorite poll" done by the Gryffindor house! |

| The Fable of the Dogwood
By Ariene Callahan The Dogwood Tree is a lovely tree, as it's blooms tell of the coming spring. In Christian fables, the Dogwood is proclaimed to have been used to construct the cross, that crucified Jesus of Nazareth. According to this fable, in the time of Jesus, the dogwoods was larger and stronger than it is today. Jesus then changed the plant to its current form today, after his crucifixion. It's fabled that He shortened and twisted its branches, to assure an end to the use of the dogwood, for construction for crucifixion crosses. Then Jesus transformed the dogwood's "inflorescence into the form of crucifixion itself." (wikipedia) The cross-shaped, four white bracts are said to represent the four corners of the cross. Each bract bearing a rusty indentation as of a nail. The red stamens of the flower, represent His crown of thorns. The clustered red fruit represents His blood. According to gotquestions.org, the legend of the dogwood tree is very likely not accurate. There is a known poem of this legend, however there is no biblical basis to it. "In Jesus' time, the dogwood grew To a stately size and a lovely hue. 'Twas strong & firm it's branches interwoven For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen. Seeing the distress at this use of their wood Christ made a promise which still holds good: "Never again shall the dogwood grow Large enough to be used so Slender & twisted, it shall be With blossoms like the cross for all to see. As blood stains the petals marked in brown The blossom's center wears a thorny crown. All who see it will remember me Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree. Cherished and protected this tree shall be A reminder to all of my agony." |

Quaffles are the balls you throw through the hoops in an attempt to score. 4.) Bludgers are the balls you whack at opposing team Chasers and away from your team Chasers. (Unless you're Jenii Chang, then you whack Beaters.) 5.) Do try and spell opposing team members names right, we don't care about anything else spelled correctly, but do get the names right. 6.) Read the previous page if needed in order to get your possession count right. 7.) You can only whack bludgers at opponent chasers. 8.)Those chasers must be named when targeted you can't just hit bludgers at random people. 9.) Coherent, relative posts are necessary when not actually doing anything related to the match itself. Timing is everything. Filling up your post with smilies accomplishes nothing when no one knows what you're on about. 10.) And finally, never ever be caught wearing yellow & black in the stands, it's considered bad luck and you might be mistaken for a bumblebee. |
