The Badger Totem
by Catrina Wolfe
In many cultures, there is something called an animal totem.
The totem animal will sometimes reveal itself in dreams or may be an animal
we are simply attracted to in our life. Other times our totem animal may be one we fear.
Native Americans for example, believe that there are 9 totems, 2 of which are your personal totems or power animal, and other totems which may appear to you throughout your lifetime as they are needed. These totems are guides and protectors and can be very helpful on your path through life. The totem can be in natural or mythological form. In this case we will be talking about the badger.
The badger totem is believed to be a great healer and a keeper of the earth's herbs. The aggressive nature of this animal is helpful in keeping dark energies at bay.
A badger is a good totem for people who have an even temperament as the badger can get out of control. Often people who have a badger for their power animal, are independent, leaders, comfortable being alone.
The badger is just one of many animal spirit guides, people in many cultures
find themselves leading a happier life on many levels, by honoring and allowing themselves to be guided by their totems.

Writing and Poetry Club Has Reopened!
By Adrianna La Cerva
A few weeks back the Writing and Poetry Club closed it's doors, getting ready to make some changes. Students anxiously waited as behind the scenes transformations took place. It's wasn't long before the Club reopened its doors to the school, revealing a whole new look.
Back and better than ever, the club will showcase a few changes. Students can request to sign up for either general writing and/or poetry club. If choosing both, you will have two separate folders. Changes also include new rules, which are now in effect and stricter than in the past as to what is acceptable writing. In addition, a new point system will raise the point value for most writings. Professor Dickinson, Advisor of the club, also had a surprise for those who were among the first to join!
I caught up with Professor Dickinson in the annex building on the day the Writing and Poetry reopened.

Adrianna: First off, let me say that the writing club looks great! What are you most proud of regarding these new welcome changes?
Prof. Dickinson: I love the look of the boards, they are just stunning!

Adrianna: I see the club has been quite busy today with students eager to get set up within the writing club; were you surprised by this kind of enthusiastic activity today?

Prof. Dickinson: I wasn't surprised at all. The writing club was a popular hang-out and I know many students like to participate!

Adrianna: What words of advice do you have for the aspiring writer?

Prof. Dickinson: Just write. When you don't know what to write, just write. The more you write the better you write!

Adrianna: Can we expect to see a writing contest announcement anytime soon?

Prof. Dickinson: It is in the works!

Adrianna: Is there anything you'd like to our readers to know?
Prof. Dickinson: I look forward to reading all the writings of the different students in the club! I am excited to be working with a great group of girls to make this club an exciting place to write!
Students aspiring to become writers and those who just want to have fun with writing, need not look any further! Come down to the annex building and see what the Writing Club is all about. Join your fellow students in sharing literary work, gaining points for your house, and having fun.
My return to Hogwarts
By Cookie Minwaggle
When I left Hogwarts 4 or 5 months ago, I did not expect to miss it so much. In the year I had been attending I made many friends, found myself with motivation I didn?t know I had, and really learned some things about myself. The decision was based on things in my muggle life, but also I was feeling overwhelmed with things at Hogwarts. I wanted to do too many things for the school. I was Hufflepuff prefect, librarian, shop owner, Owl Gazette layout editor, broomstick racer, a ghost, and another character. Not to mention all the little odd jobs I found myself volunteering for constantly. I felt guilty for not being able to accomplish all the things I set out to do and knew it was time for a break. I resigned from my position as prefect, and slowly began to disappear from the halls of this great castle. I attempted to come back a couple times before, but just found myself slacking again. Hufflepuff was moving slowly when I left, and I just could not find the motivation to get !
things done.
Now that I'm back, I have to say I am thrilled. So many amazing changes have been made. Things that I thought were going to be discussed forever and never get done are in full swing. Hufflepuff is busy and exciting again. Everyone has so much enthusiasm, and it really just raises my house spirit. Hogwarts seems to be so much more organized and on the track I always wanted it to be. I am so proud of all the accomplishments of the Professors, prefects, head boy and girl, and of course the students. Just wanted to say I am honored to be part of such a great school and am happier than ever to be back. And to remind everyone, not to get overwhelmed with responsibilities, because there is always a friend close by to help you out, no matter where you are at Hogwarts.
House Pride
By Lorena Quietglass
Imagine all my friends and foes
A world with no competition
A world filled with tears and woes
And constant repetition
We'd never try to get better
We'd all just be the same
And no one would matter
Wouldn't that be a shame?
We would have no rivals
We would have no allies
Everyday would be trivial
With no strengthening ties
But you don't have to be like that
This dim thing can be set aside
If we all take a moment and remember
To keep up with our House Pride!

How to Build a Slytherin Snowman
By: Jennifer Kull (JUNK)

1. Gather a bunch of snow into a pile
2. Take out your wand and point it AT the snow
3. Say "Homunculus Niveum Intra Slytherin!" (meaning "little man of snow in Slytherin") in a clear voice. A green snowman will appear.
4. Now Point you wand at its head and say "Adaperio Genae!" (meaning "open eyes") in a clear voice.
5. His/her eyes will open, most likely being green, as well.

And thus you have your snowman. Of course, each person's individual snowman will turn out differently, just as each person's personality is different. What are you waiting for? Go create your very own Slytherin Snowman!
When Boredom Strikes
By: Seraphina Rosehill

When boredom strikes a Slytherin it is rarely a good thing, depending on which side of the boredom you find yourself! Unfortunately for her, Slytherin Prefect Jennifer Kull, found herself on the wrong side of the boredom of a couple students, who shall remain nameless. For their protection, of course!
As rumor has it, someone snuck up on the half-gorgon while she was sleeping, and managed to feed the snakes that adorn the girls head, Pop Rocks! Apparently, the snakes took a liking to the candy and managed to eat almost an entire package apiece, before the girl woke and realized what had happened. I spoke with a few witnesses that were around for the aftermath and they reported seeing some strange behavior from the Prefect afterwards. One student said: She came into the common room, obviously not happy about something. Her snakes kept, Well. Burping; Thats right, you heard it hear first! When fed some of the Muggle candy, Pop Rocks, the snakes that call the half-gorgons head home, will burp uncontrollably! Soon after the whole mess began, Jen was seen giving some ginger ale to each of her snakes, and before long, things seemed to be back to normal.
It still is not completely clear who masterminded this whole affair. Rumors have flown all over the common room, including the mention of Jens fianc, Darmean Volten as having been involved, but no one student has been pinpointed as the culprit. Recently, the half-gorgon was seen carrying some very mysterious packages, no doubt planning her revenge against all of those involved.
Been here forever
By: Flowershine Stone

I've been here forever! Sitting alone and thinking about you every night and day! You have just ignored me. I've just gazed at you and thought what would life be like if you just understood me.

I've cried so long as I thought about you. You just look at me then look at the other girls. Why can't you never understand me! Just tell me what I have to do to make you look at me. I'll change myself to be the girl you want me to be. Even if it takes all my life.

I just want to fly away and get away from all this pain. At least I'll be away from someone that causes me pain just because I like them. I'll be an angel and look down at you. I'll take care of you even if you never noticed me my entire life of living. I will be with you forever. I will never leave you alone or get yourself injured like you injured me.
Slytherins Favorite Bulletin Board Smilie
By: Jennifer Kull (JUNK)

Well, the votes are in! The favorite smilie found on the Bulletin Board
by Slytherins is the one that comes up :freaked:. It shows our inner
most feelings when it comes to excitement, as most of us generally do
not stay still. It shows our willing to be excited by anything at all,
as well. But most of all, this smilie shows the side that most others
NOT in Slytherin rarely get the chance to see: We're actually a happy
bunch. So, watch your socks, kiddies! Us Slytherins are fierce when it
comes to the happy face.

Bargain Candy Shopping
By Fiona Chauvet

A few issues ago I wrote about the best places to go in the shopping areas to get your school supplies for a low cost. Now that Halloween has come, you probably want to know how you can save a galleon on purchasing all that expensive candy. Here are a few ways, and also a few places to shop for those oh-so-yummy treats.

The first and best way is to make your own Halloween treats. I personally love caramel apples. All you do is buy a bag of apples, melt some caramel and bingo! Cockroach Clusters are yummy and cheap to make too. Just melt some chocolate and cover small clusters of peanuts with it. If you love chocolate like me, then you;ll go crazy for cauldron cakes. Make a batch of devils food cake mix and pour it into cupcake molds. Then attach black licorice to the top. Sounds good, right?

If youre not a wiz in the kitchen, then youre better off shopping for your candy. Honeydukes is always reliable for their yummy candy, but Slytherin Sweets Shoppe has a really interesting and unique selection of treats too. They both have good prices and you can beat the food either.

There are a few ways to get the best out of finding the yummiest and best candy at Hogwarts. Enjoy, but dont get a stomach ache!
