Petrified Wood-Huber Wash S35, 36 T41S R11W                3/16/05
 
 Huber Wash, in the Zion NP, SW is oriented N-S - which is the most recent fracture 
system for our area (parallel to Coal pits wash- where basalts dated .25 to .7 my. have 
been dumped into Pleistocene gravels and later fractured N-S- and to Hurricane fault and 
latest river systems, such as Rio Grande and Colorado Rivers).
 Two miles into the park, the Huber Ck- which was running- dead ends into a box with 
hanging gardens, and the upper layer of Moenkopi Trm. Above this box lies the Chinle, 
with a wall display of petrified logs. There is a whole tree, about 10 meters length, 
preserved at an angle to bedding of about 15 degrees. This is surrounded by pea gravel 
conglomerates, with no hint of volcanic ash. Apparently the flood rose so rapidly that the 
tree remained non-horizontal; even its top limbs, although broken, are displayed. Its color 
is black and white stripes- indicating both opalization and petrification of original organic 
structure.
 On an outside bend of a meander, 1.5 km inside the wash, there exists a small 
compressive fault- thrust and flexure- in the Menkopi; this is from the west, and causes 1 
meter dislacement. This is not presented on the Zion geological map, but  is indicative of 
Laramide stresses; the strike of the thrust is about N-S. This may pertain to the residual 
weaknesses, which oriented the Hurricane and later faulting. This and the petrified are
