Drift Package (re)Build
Recently, we have acquired a used drift chassis, an MR-4TC SD, from a longtime friend who changed cars. We paid $100 USD for it. It seems that we were to get a good deal. Titanium screw set, front one-way, center one-way, Stage 1, and graphite suspension arms were all to be included. Our intent was to rebuild the chassis into a stock spec AE86 drift car with mild upgrades and a brushed motor. It is meant to have superior handling characteristic while being naturally aspirated (^^)
08/02/08: The chassis. You can see it seems in good shape. It is actually, but after we broke everything down, there was alot of dirt in the drivetrain as expected. Also, somethings were not installed properly or missing! We started from the front disasembling everything and cleaning. Sequentially, we encountered one surprise after another whether it was dirt or very worn parts.
The front of the car's problems included:
- Melted Ball differential (the metal shim inside was molded to the plastic axle! I've never seen this...)
- Stuck bearings (one had it's shield fall out as I removed it but luckily it went back in)
- Universal pin missing on one side, and beat up dogbones
- Worn toe rod ends
- Missing lower suspension mount spacers
- Missing servo mount
- Missing antenna mount

The rear of the car's problems included:

- Very worn down spur gear, and a stripped screw on the spur (we had to operate with a rotary cutting tool).
- Lower suspension arm holes were too small for the hinge bars (we had to operate with a rotary drilling tool).
- More dirt (##)

So after two days of cleaning the drivetrain is operating smoothly. In addition, we have rebuilt the dampers, matched them to stock drift package springs, and repositioned the rear. Lucky for us, we have many Yokomo parts from our first car and extra parts we have purchased over the years. Things like screws, o-rings, wheel hubs etc. However, some parts we needed to order....
8/9/08: Parts were ordered and arrived a few days later. Ready for install! In addition to standard parts, we purchased a new front-one way unit and bumper weights.
We already had electronics....
And the power plant along with cooling system!
8/11/08: The new HP front one-way unit from Yokomo. It is different from the HD unit in that the cups are black, and there is a ball bearing in each side now. It should operate very smoothly.
The chassis is nearly reassembled after a night's sleep. Here, we are sealing the spur and pinion up. As you can see, the spur gear cover and duct tape leave it less susceptible to dirt.
The bottom of the chassis and motor are also protected now using duct and fiberglass tape..
And finally, it is done after about a week's worth of time!
