| 7-26-03 It's been a while since my last crazy night, but this night I got some pretty good material. It all started off at about 12:35 am. A woman called the office asking me to check in on her husband in one of our rooms. Not knowing what I should be looking for, I asked her what to check for. She told me that her husband had been recieving mental care while at our hotel. Concerned that I knew nothing of this, I asked her for more information. She told me that doctors had been to his room, but now he was by himself and he was suicidal. I'm not sure what kind of doctors leave a suicidal man in a strange hotel room alone, but I decided that checking on him was a very good idea and told the woman to call back after ten minutes. As I walked to the room, I wondered whether this would be the first dead body I would find here. We have had two found in rooms since I started working here, but I, thankfully, was not involved in either. On my way to the room I stopped at the front desk to find out if the name the woman gave me was indeed the man in that room. He was and, as it turns out, he was a doctor also. The doctor thing makes this a little hard to swallow towards the end. But anyway, I get to the room and I find it completely empty and apparently unused. There was no luggage, nothing moved, and no doctor. I returned to the office and waited for the woman's call. She did call on time and I told her that the doctor was not in his room. To this she responded; "Oh God. He must be out driving and drinking." I asked the woman why he was allowed to be driving if he were drinking, and why he was allowed to be drinking if he were suicidal. She just stated that he must have taken his car and was out on the road drinking and popping pills. At this point, hotel security wasn't going to be much help to this woman, so I gave her the number to our local police and suggested she give them a description of the man and the vehicle and tell them of his behavior. Fortunately I did not hear back from the woman and the doctor did not kill himself in our hotel. That made me very happy. Unfortunately, that very happy feeling only lasted until about three in the morning. A man and a woman from a wedding we had hosted were arguing in the hallway by the front desk. I walked past them and listened in to guage whether or not they would be a problem. They seemed to be speaking in reasonable tones and not to be very upset. To me it just seemed that they were merely disagreeing over something. They noticed me paying attention to them, and moved away from the desk and continued in one of our other hallways. I kept an eye on them off and on for the next half hour. I would pop my head out from the office behind the front desk and make sure the noise was not too loud for the hallway they were in. Noise turned out to be the least of my problems. On the third or fourth time I checked on them, the man had begun pushing the woman and pointing his finger in her face. By the time I had crossed the office and opened the door, the woman was on the floor and the man was dragging her by the arm. As soon as he saw me coming he let go and she got to her feet. They both said that there was no problem and I told them that they would have to leave anyway. I escorted them to the parking lot and they began to argue again. I informed them that leaving meant leaving the property and they left in their car. I'm not sure why the woman left with him, but that is the norm and not the exception when you work the overnight shift. Until next time. |
