KEYNOTE ADDRESS ~ Dr.Maggie Mamen,.

The Pampered Child Syndrome and How to Avoid It

With every good intention, we work at keeping our children happy, stimulated and challenged. However, if we are not careful, our children can become accustomed to a high standard of attention, which they then begin to demand. And good servants are hard to find. In extreme cases, these children can develop a range of mental health problems that cause difficulties in their overall development. This Keynote presentation outlines the development of the Pampered Child Syndrome, and suggests ways in which we can achieve a balance for our children that can allow them to train for real life.
Dr. Maggie Mamen is a clinical psychologist in a multidisciplinary private practice in Ottawa, Ontario, who specializes in working with children, adolescents and their families. She is the author of two books on parenting, the best-seller Who's In Charge? A Guide to Family Management (Creative Bound, 1997) and Laughter, Love and Limits: Parenting for Life (Creative Bound, 1998), and a recent handbook for parents and professionals on Nonverbal Learning Disabilities and Their Clinical Subtypes. Maggie has appeared on radio and television across Canada, and is a regular columnist for City Woman Magazine. She has taught university courses on child development and exceptional children for many years, and gives frequent workshops and seminars for community groups, teachers and other professionals, and parents of children of all ages. Prior to establishing her own practice in 1990, Maggie worked at Carleton University, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the former Carleton Board of Education. She was the first elected President of the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Maggie and her husband are the parents of three adult children and two behaviourally-challenged dogs
