Green Eyes by Ouvalyrin
When Itachi was young, he had felt that his mother
was afraid of him. He supposed this should have dismayed him. From what he had
gleaned from snatches of others’ conversations, mothers were essential parts of
daily life and to be fiercely protective of. Naturally, insults to one’s mother
were enough provocation to send people into rages.
The fact that he could shrug off his parent’s fear of him disturbed him, but
only slightly. It was just fear, and Itachi was
used to instilling it wherever he went. By now he thought it a part of being a
“genius,” though he was still unsure of what exactly that entailed.
Besides, there were more important things.
Sasuke’s eyes were large and dark. The problem with being a
genius, Itachi reflected, was that he could never
leave it at “large and dark.” He found it unusual for such a young child to
have so much pigment in his eyes and hair and so little in his skin, but he
supposed that a genetic trait of the Uchiha’s.
When Itachi was ten, he discovered the difference
between him and Sasuke. He had always been aware of
it—it was too obvious not to—but it had never really been much of a factor.
It
was all about the eyes. Everything about the Uchihas,
everything that made them really special, was connected to their eyes
and the Sharingan. Sasuke’s
eyes were almost fever-bright and reflected his every emotion, which was
impractical and useless but oddly amusing.
Sasuke’s were large and innocent and they were the kind
that had never known any true pain. Itachi found
himself dreading the day they would (late at night he would realize this was
because he wouldn’t have caused that hurt).
And Itachi’s—everyone else’s really, but he didn’t
care about them—Itachi’s were just tired. He
stared at himself. The lines on his face made him look older,
his eyes would catch the light and turn dark red...
He
turned away in disgust. Useless contemplation; what good would they do him?
When Itachi saw Sasuke
later that day, he wanted to hurt him, to make the too innocent eyes like his
own, and he realized he was jealous.
