| Kyoto is without a doubt the best city in Japan for vegans. There are a number of 100% vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants as well as a couple of different temples where you can eat traditional Japanese Buddhist lunch sets (not sure of the temple names - sorry!) Sunny Place Hours: Closed Monday Phone: (075) 722 1738 Closest station is Subway Kitayama. Come out of the station and walk beside the shops on the opposite side of the road to the Botanical Gardens until you come to a restaurant / shop called Toyotei on a corner (not far from station). Turn right here and it's on the right hand side about one or two blocks away. Or if that's too complicated here is a MAP Sunny Place is excellent. I lived in Kobe and didn't mind sitting on a train for 2 hours to get there. The atmosphere is inviting and relaxed, they play good music and most importantly, the menu is entirely vegan. They have soups, desserts, smoothies (including chocolate!), and excellent main dishes which reminded me of some of the places I used to go to back in Australia. You can also buy blocks of frozen tempeh for 300 yen. Yay for Sunny Place! Mikoan From Sanjo Keihan or Sanjo Subway Station walk down Kawabata-dori with the river across the road on your left. Walk for a couple of minutes and the restaurant will be on your right a bit before Lawson and Reizei-dori. Here is a MAP This is a small vegan restaurant that serves delicious traditional Japanese food. I usually have an 800 yen lunch set which includes rice, daikon and carrot soup, okara spring rolls, and a couple of small servings of delicious Japanese style vegetable dishes.
