Koya-san is a mountain in Wakayama Prefecture which has a small Buddhist town at the top. A number of the temples there offer Buddhist vegan lunches for about 3000 yen. You can also stay overnight at a temple for around 10,000 yen which is a much better option because the atmosphere of the town changes dramatically when the tourist buses leave and you can participate in some of the temple activities like meditation and cleaning. If you stay overnight you'll be provided with two meals at around 6 in the evening and 6 in the morning. The food is traditional Japanese and the meals are quite large. Very delicately presented and the tastes are amazing. It's completely vegan and they don't use onion or garlic either. There are details of how to get there in the Japan Lonely Planet as well as in other travel guides.
