My Father My Friend

Tall and quiet a man of few words
So soft spoken, was seldom heard
A fast walker, a quick thinker
Part time fireman and a beer drinker
Navy man, and World War 2 Vet
Served his country with no regret
A loving husband, his love was true
For his family, there's nothing he would not do
When times were hard he had his way
Putting food on the table day after day
He lived in pain, an ailing back
Never a complaint he faced this fact
He loved to laugh and joke around
Bearing his hurt not making a sound
From a deck of cards, to horseshoe pits
Whipping our butts getting his kicks
He was a master at all, liked to boast
Giving us lessons, is what he enjoyed the most
So many things, to many to list
Still in our hearts and surely missed
