History: I have visited over 100 primary schools as a supply teacher in the last five years and have often thought it a shame that pupils do not get to spend more learning time outside of the classroom, in what are frequently beautiful grounds.
Of course there are problems with just going out onto the field for a lesson: pupils can tend to forget the normal class rules; there are a lack of suitable surfaces for working on and probably most significantly, we expose them to the potentially harmful rays of the sun.

Outer Places design and install outdoor classrooms, based on U.V blocking, fabric shade sails which are strung, under tension, between timber uprights, as exemplified in the pictures below.
They are often mistaken for giant sculptures, as the geometric shapes, colours and angles created are quite stunning, as are the shadows cast beneath the structure.
With sails in your school colours and the school banner flying atop, why not inspire your pupils by working within a classroom that resembles a U.F.O, circus tent, or pirate ship?

How can an Outdoor Classroom benefit your school?
Tables/ Stages: Although these are an integral part of our classrooms, there is of course the option to leave them out, or to buy one later when funds allow.
Each table seats an entire class around it and is hand built, on site, from sustainably forested timber. Rectangular, hexagonal or a round table worthy of King Arthurs knights, all of our tables are strong enough to be used as a stage for drama, assemblies or school productions.

Teachers chair: Carved from a solid tree stump, our wizard style teachers chairs are giant-sized one-offs.
Pupil seating: Long, low, wooden benches arranged around a circular table; smaller wizard style chairs carved from stumps; leaf shaped stools or a natural, grassy amphitheatre; the possibilities are endless.

Pricing: We understand only too well the difficulty that schools face when funding such projects. As far as we are aware there are only a handful of other companies supplying this service in the country and we are determined to be the most cost effective. We offer a free site visit and no obligation quote and with prices for a 7x10m outdoor classroom starting at 1400 including full installation, we are sure that you will not find a cheaper alternative.
In our eagerness to firmly establish ourselves in this market we are offering a massive 20% discount to any school that books a site visit before November 2007 and subsequently places an order with us. In addition, we carry a list of potential sources of grants and funding bodies that may be able to help you with this type of outdoor project.

Creating Bespoke Covered Spaces and Outdoor Classrooms
Working in the fresh air, surrounded by the sights, smells and sounds of nature, can excite the senses and encourage a positive learning atmosphere, leading to greater pupil creativity and an eagerness to become involved in more hands-on tasks. Our shade sails significantly reduce both U.V penetration and the temperature in their shade, so allowing you to utilise the outdoor environment in sunny months for safe and comfortable day-to-day lessons.

Our giant-size, floor-level tables are solid enough to be used as a stage so why not use the space for assemblies, or an al fresco summers evening musical production for parents?

They are a visually striking alternative to solid structures such as summerhouses or timber roofed gazebos. In addition they are a fraction of the price, and because they are classed as temporary structures they are almost always exempt from planning permission requirements.

Of course pupils normally associate the school grounds with playtime or P.E but the central focus of a whole class, floor level table and the structural poles around them, act to subconsciously remind pupils that they are still operating within a learning environment and that normal rules still apply.
An 8 sail design, prices start from 1400
We are also installers for 'Kemp sails', probably the most established shade sail manufacturers in the country. For more information go to:
