THURSDAY
It really first hit me that I had set foot on American soil (as the immigration officers so solemnly had put it in the sweaty little office in Chicago) when I had to repeat my request for a "bottle of water" several times before the dude behind the counter at Fajita Family understood me: "Ahh, you mean a baar-del of wha-der". This was followed by a a big smile and a huge helping of mouth-watering Mexican-American fast food for a couple of dollars - a choice place.

Everything in America is B I G - especially compared to Cindy

- and that's just the starter!

FRIDAY
Little did I know that Larry and Barbara's desert retreat was indeed a remote retreat situated in the desert far away from the civilised world of highway greasy spoons and all that comes with it. Next morning we found ourselves on their stunning Mexican-style ranch, surrounded by desert beauty and wilderness and we got very excited about catching rattle snakes in the rocks.

... in the middle of nowhere!

Barbara and Larry's beautiful ranch in the middle of the desert.

A definite upgrade from when we used to sleep under plastic sheets in New Zealand!

We spent the first day in our new surroundings looking for rattlers in the boulders behind the house - a fabulous playground with a couple of lovely cacti in bloom.

Exploring the boulders.

Who said 'too many cooks spoil the food?'! About 15 people can help in this kitchen at the same time!
SATURDAY
Having explored the surrounding desert land, we decided to go on a 'cultural excursion' to Mexico. We tramped through numerous shops in search of the perfect present for our Easter present swap game and enjoyed a massive Mexican meal in a 'cantina'. Nobody got married or bought illegal drugs, and even I managed to get back into the States again.

Do you recognise any of these dudes from the OUTC tramping club?
EASTER SUNDAY
As tradition has it, Easter Sunday was packed with challenging events in the desert sun. The Easter bunnies took on different personalities, and got into two teams to battle each other with three-legged races, blindfolded races around the pool, untying a human knot, forming a square with rope without blindfolded and mute and finally, performing an act as American Idols.

The photos speak for themselves
