Smile for Yourself
by
Iggy Benavente

It is in this world that I am surrounded by the dark and the fire,
Lost in the maze of concrete and steel, a dead wind blows by,
Faces around me both fake and bear the scars of reality,
It is cold and damp, and so are the hearts of mankind.
Though you bear the torch, no fire shall light it.
Though the world ages, nothing in it ever changes,
Though you lend your heart to another, there is no space to accept it,
Though the sands blow in the wind, the cruel heat spreads.
That is where I stand, it has been as so from the beginning,
I am too proud to stay deaf, silent, and alone.
But there are those who would riducle us with no remorse,
But as the energies of the world would have it,
We are all one and the same, with brilliant diversity.
It is from the same blood that we course through the veins of the Earth,
The waters in which our dreams and malice drifts are we connected,
The air in which curses and laughter linger do we breathe,
It is in our faces that we may see the ages pass,
And to gze in the eyes of ourselves with glistening pools,
Though you smile for the sake of others, it is ok to smile for yourself.
