Stand By Me      by Linda Maille

Love, what is it meant to be?

Love is a special feeling between two

Is it meant to be sweet or suffocating?

Bitter or poignant?

A part of your soul or just convenient.

Love the wrong way leads to pain and heartache

Sorrow or joy, what a simple choice

Is it ever that simple?

Life isnt simple

Love is complicated,

bitter sweet or freeing

Love, honour and obey

Love thy father and mother

Honour your elders

Obey your partner

Love places a chain around the heart

Do you have the key?

A LETTER FROM THE ROAD AND RAIL

by David

The Jacksons picked a letter up from the Tarras store:
an official letter signed and sealed from the NZR;
We regret to inform you that we can no longer carry
your boxes of rabbits by the New Zealand Railway.
The box is too heavy for our men to lift
so please come up with an alternative.

The Jacksons came to Ardgour to make a living there
when times were hard in Central with each depression year.
Their home was built of poplar poles with scrim around them wrapped-
Len Jackson tramped the mountains where the wild bun was trapped.
At night they dressed the rabbits by the glow of kerosene-
In the morn while Len was hunting Dorrie packed each carcase clean.

The rabbits went to Wellington, a ready market there,
packed in an empty kerosene case which Dorrie did prepare.
She strapped the case for balance to the pushbike carrier
and took off over the gravel road to the bus stop at the store.
(Young Bruce now due to go to school had to take his chance
as straddled on the crossbar was his lucky circumstance.)

Mervyn sat on the handlebars so not to be left at home
as Dorrie pedalled to the store to catch the freight to Wellington.
A tribute to the strength of one who Lennie Jackson married
two jokers could not lift the crate which Dorrie Jackson carried.
