| Windows Movie Maker How-to | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| (These were made using WMM 5.1. Any other version and there will be discrepancies.) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 1. Open WMM. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 2. Click one of the options under #1. Capture Video. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. If you choose "Capture from Video Device," you will have to use your web cam while you're using WMM at the moment. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. If you choose "Import Video," you will browse for your video file on your computer, then double-click it. Your video will then be imported. Your video will be listed in the box in between your Movie Tasks and Preview boxes. It will most likely be broken up into "chapters." We'll get to that in a minute. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. If you choose "Import Pictures," you will browse to find the picture files on your computer. If you have a lot all together in one spot, a shortcut is to click on the first picture you want ONCE and then hold down shift and an arrow key or shift+pgdown and it will select all the pictures you want at once. Then click OPEN. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| D. If you choose "Import Audio or Music," browse for the music file and double click it. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 3. Everything you import will be available at the top of the screen under the toolbar in a drop-down menu called COLLECTIONS. If you import a lot of videos at once, you will be able to find them each separately as a collection. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 4. Once you have imported your videos or pictures, you can preview them one at a time before you add them to your Project. Just click on what you want to preview and click Play in the Preview box. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 5. When you are ready to add it to your project, drag it to the timeline at the bottom of the screen where it says Video. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. If you want to edit out part of it (beginning or end), hold your mouse over the edge of the clip and a double-sided arrow will show up. You can drag the border of the clip to make the clip shorter. For instance, I made a video of Jake that was longer than it needed to be because I was waiting for him to just roll over. I wanted to take out all the waiting and only have left just the part where he actually rolled over. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 6. Repeat step 5 over and over until you have added everything to the timeline that you want to be part of your project. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 7. To make effects, such as blurred, fade in, fade out, grayscale, old, rotate, etc? If you right-click on the photo or video clip, the options to "Fade In" or "Fade Out" are already there. There are 2 ways to add other effects. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|  A. You can right-click and choose "Video Effects," or | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. You can click "Video Effects" under option #2 Edit Movie on the left hand side, then drag the desired effect to the picture or video you want it added to. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 8. If you choose the video effects by right clicking, you must choose only the effect you want for that picture in particular. Click the effect you want, click ADD, and then click OK. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 9. To change the transitions, such as dissolve, flip, page curl, roll, shatter, sweep in, spin in, etc, do it just like option B for #7. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 10. To add credits to the movie, click "Make titles or credits" under option #2 Edit Movie on the left hand side. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. Choose where you want the text. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. Type what you want it to say. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. If you don't like the font or the animation, you are given the option to change that too. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| D. When finished, click "Done, add title to movie." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 11. If you don't want to use the time to add your own transitions, you can choose "Make an Auto Movie" under option #2 Edit Movie and choose what type of video you want to have and it will do it all for you. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 12. To add music, either | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A. click "Import Audio or Music" under option #1 Capture Video, or | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| B. if you imported it at the beginning of the project, click the dropdown menu next to collections and find your audio file there. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| C. Drag your audio to the timeline where it says Audio/Music. You place it where you want it to start. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 13. To make your video last as long as your music or vice versa, drag the audio to where you want it to stop in correlation to your video or slideshow. If you want the video/pictures to stop when the song is over, drag the border of each to make them last longer. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 14. If you have audio in your clip that you want to hear over the background music at that specific time, you can change the levels to make the background audio quieter or muted and your video audio louder. Just right click on the audio and click Volume or Mute. The Audio/Music (in the timeline) is the specific background music or song you choose to go throughout the entire video or slideshow. The Audio (in the timeline) is whatever audio you can hear in your video clip. (If there is any, it will be in that space in the timeline automatically.) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| 15. When you are done, choose one of the options under #3 Finish Movie. Then follow the steps. Once you are ready to close the program, you will be asked if you would like to save the project itself. If you think you may want to come back and make changes, say Yes. If you are definitely done and only want your slideshow or movie, then say No. The project will be deleted upon exiting the program. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
