Remaining on topic
Taking Control

Some people may incorrectly feel that the moderators desire to move issues to the appropriate group demonstrates excessive control. This page will relate to that statement.

Some people may indeed want to discuss off-topic issues. However, that does not mean that everybody else on the group should be forced to receive those issues in their emailboxes.

If subjects relating to other groups are important, then you may feel free to join the relevant group and discuss them there.

If those issues aren't important enough to join that group, then this group should not be burdened with them.

Somebody does have to take control. It will either be the moderator or a succession of subscribers. The first option is preferred - it leads to a harmonious group. The second option leads to chaos and bedlam.

Think of each group as a topical magazine. If you want to read about other topics, then you subscribe to a second magazine!

Who is really trying to control issues?

It is clear that the person writing the off-topic e-mail – and not the moderator – is trying to exert excessive control. They want to force everybody else on the group to receive unwelcome mail. The subscribers joined the group with a specific purpose in mind, but that does not matter to the one posting irrelevant email. Thats not fair.

Furthermore, the one who is posting irrelevant information is also trying to control the information on another group that they don't even belong to. They are preventing the other group from receiving information that is relevant to them.

These Jewish and Hebrew groups will prevent off-topic postings. No subscriber may gain control over or force any group to read information that it did not expect to receive.
