Our Jewish Groups
Remaining on topic
But It's Important

"Post this message to all your groups."

OK, so you have a cause. You believe in it, and you feel that it is important. However, you can't be bothered to join our own cause - these groups.

This attitude is unfair. We believe in our cause - these groups - and you believe in yours. You are asking all of the subscribers to stop our work and to pay attention to your message. However, you are not willing to give our discussions the attention they deserve.

This reminds us of one of the Four Sons that we read about in the Passover Haggadah - the one who asks "Mah Haavoda Hazot Lachem - What is all of this work and effort that you are involved in?" He asks about "you" rather than "us". The Haggadah explains that this son has excluded himself from the Israeli nation.

The Jewish religion clearly does not look favorably on this attitude.

Neither do we.

"I'm too busy to subscribe to more forums"

So don't.

"I just want to make an important announcement"

But these are discussion groups, not resources for making important announcements.

Dozens of "important" announcements are sent to each group, every day. Would you want to be part of a group that sent out that many "important" announcements from all those other people? If you would belong to such a group, you'd probably use your Delete key a great deal.

These groups do not post "important" announcements. The groups discuss issues that meet the group guidelines. Those announcements can be posted elsewhere.

"I don't want to join any more groups, but I want all of your subscribers to read this important message."

You want to avoid the inconvenience involved in subscribing to more than one list. That certainly does make life easy for you.

However, it's inconsiderate to everybody else. Do you think they want to read your message on each of the lists they have joined?

"But it's very important. It has to be posted. I don't care what the topic is. Jewish lives and the survival of the Jewish Nation depend on it."

Does that mean that our guidelines only apply to the "unimportant" messages posted by others?

Our guidelines cannot be determined by each subscriber's analysis of its importance. If that would be the case, then there would no longer be groups based on topics. "Important" messages would clog up the groups.

Sounds absurd, doesn't it. Wise subscribers would leave that "important" group and join those that are on topic.

So would this moderator.

That's why we don't post those messages.
