Our Jewish Groups
Guidelines
Patience

This page is still under construction.

Our current television culture is reflected in the participants' attitude towards the forums.

Members sometimes complain about insufficient postings in their area of interest. They, of course, did not post anything to the group, but they complain that other people didn't post the specific questions that they had in mind. Sometimes these people are new to the group. They see that the discussion is not in the specific thing that they had in mind, so they leave the group. When I ask them later why they left the group, sometimes they explain to me that they were looking for a particular thing. I tell them that that had been discussed in the past, maybe even a number of times, and that they could find it in the messages section, but as it happens nobody had discussed that particular aspect of the topic in the past week and a half when they were subscribers. It didn't occur to them that there could be more beyond what they saw during the brief time that they were a subscriber.

This is a reflection of people today. They like to sit back and they don't necessarily want to participate. They don't have the patience for it. They want to be entertained and just as in the television culture, if they're not entertained sufficiently or in the way that they want, they will change the channel. Similarly, these people want instant gratification in their group. Even though a group may relate to a specific area that they want, they want it now. They want to discuss their specific area now when they push the button. If it doesn't then they will complain or leave the group.

That's today's culture of instant gratification or of immediately changing the channel if it doesn't show exactly what you want at that moment.
