Many people forbid their children from using the Internet. Others do not allow the Internet (or television) in their home, because of the negative influence of these technologies on children.

Those who make such restrictions in their homes are to be applauded. And, if the person who runs so many Jewish websites and forums is making this recommendation, then it may be wise for everybody to give it the proper thought!

This article relates to those who have made a decision to have Internet in their home.

It is important to set rules for using the Internet. The following options may be considered, and we welcome additional recommendations or suggestions:

• Ask your own Rabbi about using the Internet. Many Rabbis (justifiably) forbid it, and others place strict limits or restrictions on its use.
• Don't allow your child to use the Internet unless he has a specific and stated goal.
• Set a time limit. Get out of the Internet after that limit is reached. You can use an alarm clock or the timer in your cell phone may offer a good timer.
• Don't allow your child to use the Internet during free time. Time at the Internet sometimes expands in order to fill up any available free time. Your child should use the Internet during a busy period.
• The evening or vacation time should be used for studies, chores, or for visiting people.
• Your Internet computer should be placed in a central, busy location in your home.
• Place a worthwhile, attractive, interesting Sefer near the computer. Your child may choose to read it instead. Otherwise, the Sefer may remind the child that there are better and more important things to do.
• If you find that it is difficult to restrict the use of the Internet, have your child take a break from going online for several days.
• Rabbi Vozner ruled that the laws of Yichud apply when using the Internet.
