In a number of our Jewish Groups relate to issues of Jewish Law. The Jewish Law is quite clear, but the specific individual practice is determined in conjunction with his own Rabbi.
How does this work? The person with a question approaches his Rabbi and asks it as well as he can. A great deal of time may be spent clarifying the issue.
Of course, if the person can clarify his question in his own mind and if he can then discuss the relationship of his issue to Jewish law, then he can present it more effectively to his Rabbi.
If he has assistance from others who are familiar with Jewish law, who have asked similar questions in the past, or who know sources that discuss this issue, then the questioner may be able to see how his issue fits in with the big picture.
In most cases the person is then sent off to his own rabbi. Armed with a clear understanding of his issue, he will be able to present it in an intelligent manner.
The question that he asks his Rabbi is now quite specific and the response makes the job of the Rabbi more efficient. That is yet another benefit of these groups.
Others who do not have questions for the group but who read issues presented by others also benefit from this procedure. Their understanding of major issues has been clarified, and they understand how to relate to their own needs when an issue arises.
