Yahoo works differently from your regular email system. It goes through various platforms. The different platforms each change the encoding, and Hebrew may no longer be readable when it arrives at the next platform.
That may be the case if all subscribers are in Israel or they all agree on a specific platform. Even then there are problems. Our large, worldwide groups have subscribers who run the Internet on a variety of platforms.
That does not mean that everybody else on the group was necessarily able to read it.
No. The fact that a message goes through once satisfactorily does not mean that it will be readable the next time, or any subsequent times. Each time a message goes through it gets routed to random Yahoo and Internet servers. Those servers may affect the document in different and unpredictable ways.
Been there, done that.
The Hebrew Computing group periodically tests out the system. There is no advantage to trying out this test on additional groups. If it doesn't work on one group, it will not work on another group.
The tests carried out by the Hebrew Computing group show that the problem is greater than implementation of Unicode, although that is certainly part of the process.
Regular Internet does not mean that everybody will be able to read the text either. That would solve some of the problems, but not all.
In addition, Yahoo creates a platform which makes it viable to administer the groups. Regular email would make large groups unviable.
Hey, wait a second. What's going on over here? When I mention something about a font you say that it has to have Unicode. When I mention Unicode you say the problem is the platform. When I mention the platform you say it's something else. What is the story over here? You can't keep on changing the reasons and teh excuses.
The fact is that it's all of these factors - and much more. Until all of these factors are resolved we will not be able to have Hebrew on the Internet.
Transliterate any Hebrew that you need instead of writing it in Hebrew.
Sound out the Hebrew word, using English letters.
You may have been told by some purists on the group that there is a correct way to spell out words according to standards promoted by YIVO for Yiddish, or by the Hebrew Language Academy. Although those standards are certainly preferred, no message will be rejected because the subscriber did not use them.
Sound them out too. Each vowel and each cantillation symbol (trope) has a name.
Don't worry. They won't be difficult for long. The Mashiach (Messiah) will come very soon. When he arrives, all of the world's computers will default to Hebrew. At that time, you may have difficulty typing English on your computer.
But don't worry. We'll find a workaround for the English at that time - somehow.
I recommend that you pray every day for the speedy arrival of the Mashiach.
